Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - The mound of Van Kalesi (=The Fortress of Van) is found at a distance of 70.00 m. away from the base of the rocky citadel of Tushpa, on the north side of it, running parallel - as a long low ridge - to the gigantic rock massive. During our excavations and surveys, we were able to gain three important main results: The archaeological material which we have brought to light is extremely important and promising for the understanding of the stratigraphy in the Van region after Tilkitepe, Kalecik and Dilkaya. It is also very important for the stratigraphy of the capital Tushpa: maybe suggesting that the history of it goes back to the third millennium B.C. -- It proves, at the very least, that the spread of the Lower City during the Urartian period was not limited to the area south of Tushpa but included a region to the north. -- The upper first level of the mound consists of a cemetery running through 5 periods. Tushpa is known as Van Kalesi - "the Citadel of Van". It is called Tushpa, and in the Assyrian records Turushpa from the 9th century B.C.E. onwards. It has been suggested that this name is related to the name of the Urartian goddess Tushpuea. In the works of classical authors, Tushpa appears as Thospia, and in the Armenian sources as Tosp/ Dosp.
