Soft cover periodical, single issue, in green-grey printed paper wraps, quarto, (7-1/2 x 9-1/2 inches), the cover with engraved decoration to front of wraps printed in black. Contains 5 full page woodblock carved printed illustrations, 11 partial page in-text illustrations, 8 decorated initial capitals, and 4 decorative borders, (including ads and front of wraps, hand printed on Dutch handmade paper. Thus, [2, title and limitation pg.], [blank], [52-53] 54-87pp. , [plus 4pp. advertising], [1]. Numbering is consecutive with that of Quest Issue No. 4, see our listing 9417. **CONDITION: About Fine, with a some very, very minor crease to front of wraps, slight darkening to spine, and some slight offset browning to text, seen opposite plates. Now with tissue inserted. Overall, though, this is clean and has been well cared for. **This issue has decidedly medieval and architectural themes, marking it relevant in the Pre-Raphaelite and William Morris vein of promoting the past as a template for chivalric values, proper, handmade workmanship, and honoring the labor of the craftsperson. Hence, the article" Notes Upon Some of the Differences Between Ancient and Modern Buildings," by the architect and metalworker Arthur Stansfield Dixon (1856-1929), founder of the Birmingham School of Handicraft, and designer of their original premises. Other highlights include Edmund Hort New's wonderful full-page illustration of the medieval French castle at Fougerès. Located in Brittany, this holdfast was destroyed by Henry II in the twelfth century, and later rebuilt as a more durable fortification, sheltering artisans such as tanners, weavers, drapers and, later, glass works. *Following is a selection from the "King's Quair," the 15th-century poem written by the Scottish King James I (1394- 1437), and decorated with illustration by J. Southall and a border by Sydney Meteyard. [The ten-year old King James I sailed from North Berwick, via Bass Rock, in 1403, as his father, King Richard III attempted to keep him safe from the Stewarts. However, James was kidnapped at sea, imprisoned in the Tower of London and, later, Windsor Castle, by agents of the English King Henry IV, and not released until 1424.] The verses are from stanza 42-43 of James's poem, unfortunately "english-afied" from the original Scots. The book was issued by the publishers as 'The Coronation Edition'. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. Some pushing with very slight splitting to the extreme spine tips. The original blue publisher's boards remain very clean with just some tiny rubs to the lower corners. The gilt titling and decorations remain bright. Free from inscriptions and erasures. Light toning and spotting to the text-block and prelims. Mild offsetting to the blank end-papers with light spotting to the prelims with one small mark to the fore edge of the title and frontis pages. This edition was issued with two different wrappers. This is the more scarcer of the two and is a stiff glassine pictorial wrapper. The WRAPPER is in Very Good condition with edge-wear and loss to the spine ends and rear upper edges due to its fragility (see images). Some closed tears and nicks in places. Priced at '7/6 net' to the lower front flap. The wrapper artwork was by Alex Jardine. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. It is thought that less than fifty copies were issued with this pictorial designed wrapper. Most were issued with the other more plain design. Recipes from the members of the 'British Bartenders Guild', the book is illustrated by Frederick Carter and decorated by 'The Chevron Studio'. William J. Tarling was both President of the British Bartenders Guild and also chief bartender at 'The American Bar' at the Café Royal. The book contains original recipes and twists on a number of classic cocktails and includes one of the earliest references to the Margarita, that appeared under the name Picador. Believed to be published in an edition of only 25 copies, this present volume retains the original publisher's dustjacket, which differs from the other noted copies in existence. This variant jacket is printed on rather fragile,thin, somewhat translucent paper, with pink and purple illustration and lettering. A unique example of this variant? Tarling's cocktail guide provides recipes developed and used by members of the Bartender's Guild and contains some of the earliest known recipes for a range of cocktails. The boards are a touch warped, and are shelf rubbed, edge worn and marked, with some light tearing and fraying along the top and bottom edges of the spine. Despite this, the boards are strong and square, with gold gilt on the front and spine. Internally, the end pages are slightly tanned, but there are no other markings or inscriptions, and the pages within are crisp, clean and complete. The binding is secure.
