Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Hesperia Supplement vol. 54This volume is the first in a four-part series presenting the final results of the Molyvoti, Thrace, Archaeological Project (MTAP), a Greek-American synergasia project in northern Greece. The project is centered on a site often referred to as "Ancient Stryme," which ancient sources identified as an emporion (trading post) and polis settled by Thasians.Focusing on the 2013-2015 field seasons, this volume offers a detailed presentation of the site's stratigraphy, material culture, and historical development. It proposes a revised chronology, including a 4th-century BCE reoccupation after destruction possibly associated with Philip of Macedon, and traces diachronic change through the Early Byzantine period. Among the project's notable discoveries is a complete Classical house--one of the few uncovered in Aegean Thrace--offering valuable insights into domestic architecture and material culture. An intensive urban survey sheds light on the city's 4th-century BCE fortifications and harbors, significantly enhancing our understanding of the scale and function of coastal settlements in the region. In the surrounding chora, the area's first geomorphological study examines landscape use and shifts in the ancient coastline.Contributions from more than 20 scholars present the site's architecture, stratigraphy, ceramics, small finds, and geographical data. Together, these studies illuminate Greek-Thracian interactions, patterns of settlement and trade, and environmental change from prehistory through the Early Byzantine era in this understudied region of the northern Aegean. Hesperia Supplement vol. 54. This book, the first of 4 volumes, publishes the final results of the 20132015 seasons of the Molyvoti, Thrace, Archaeological Project in northwestern Greece. It presents the history and finds from the archaeological site often referred to as Ancient Stryme, an emporion (trading post) and polis settled by Thasians. In this work the author focuses on the social and other non-material dimensions of life that are increasingly integral to landscape archaeology. Although the geographical focus of the study is southern Epirus, and in particular the lower valley of the Acheron River, the author also attempts a general, though not exhaustive, synthesis of the Bronze Age evidence from all of Greek Epirus. The Epirote Bronze Age remains poorly known and there has been no new synthesis for some time. Until recently, most of the scholarly work has been in Greek, much of it rather inaccessible, and this may have discouraged the wide dissemination of information. More importantly for the present case, however, a fresh assessment of evidence from the whole of Epirus (and to a lesser extent, surrounding regions) was essential to place events and longer-term processes in the lower Acheron valley in proper context. The landscapes of Epirus are highly diverse, and the lower Acheron valley, as lowland, coastal, and Mediterranean in climate, presented a singular set of circumstances to Bronze Age inhabitants. The important contrasts detected across Epirus throw into relief the divergent trajectory of the lower Acheron valley, and suggest certain explanations for it. It is hoped that this work will give the reader a sense of the Bronze Age landscapes of lowland southern Epirus, and a feeling for what it might have been like to inhabit them.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - In this book, Thomas F. Tartaron presents a new and original reassessment of the maritime world of the Mycenaean Greeks of the Late Bronze Age. By all accounts a seafaring people, they enjoyed maritime connections with peoples as distant as Egypt and Sicily. These long-distance relations have been celebrated and much studied; by contrast, the vibrant worlds of local maritime interaction and exploitation of the sea have been virtually ignored. Dr Tartaron argues that local maritime networks, in the form of 'coastscapes' and 'small worlds', are far more representative of the true fabric of Mycenaean life. He offers a complete template of conceptual and methodological tools for recovering small worlds and the communities that inhabited them. Combining archaeological, geoarchaeological and anthropological approaches with ancient texts and network theory, he demonstrates the application of this scheme in several case studies. This book presents new perspectives and challenges for all archaeologists with interests in maritime connectivity.
