Maximus was a 2nd century A.D. Greek philosopher and rhetorician and the Dissertations his major work, a collection of 41 essays on philosophical, religious and other topics. Taylor (1758-1835) was a highly-regarded English translator, the first to accomplish the entire works of Plato and Aristotle; his Maximus translation first appeared in London in two volumes in 1804.

Handsome facsimile reprint of these eclectic offerings by the famed translator, first published by Edward Jeffrey in London in 1793. Taylor (1758-1835) was a highly-regarded English translator, the first to accomplish the entire works of Plato and Aristotle. The Sallust here noted was NOT the Roman historian and politician Gaius Sallustius Crispus or Sallust (c. 86-35 BCE), but rather the 4th century CE Neoplatonist writer and Roman official Saturninius Secundus Salutius (or Sallustius).
