This reader, published after World War I, begins with a poem, "The American Boy." It is a dialogue between a father and son about patriotism. Eisenhower, presided over the transformation of the United States from a fragile agrarian republic into a continental power and then a global superpower. Washington established the precedents of the office, including the cabinet system and the voluntary surrender of power after two terms.
