Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book provides a comprehensive historical and geographical overview of Java and its neighboring islands, collectively known as the Dutch East Indies. The author draws on a wealth of official documents and personal observations to illuminate the region's rich history, culture, and natural resources. Beginning with an exploration of Java's ancient Hindu-Buddhist kingdoms and the arrival of Islam, the book traces the complex political developments that unfolded under Dutch colonial rule. The author examines the VOC's (Dutch East India Company) gradual rise to power, its conflicts with local rulers, and the eventual establishment of a Dutch colonial empire. Beyond political history, the book delves into Java's diverse ethnic groups, their customs, and their interactions with the colonial administration. The author sheds light on the region's unique blend of indigenous and European influences, visible in its art, architecture, and social practices. The author also dedicates significant attention to Java's natural environment, describing its varied landscapes, abundant flora and fauna, and the economic importance of its agricultural resources.
