Random House first published this work in a two-volume set in 1934, based on the then available French text. In 1954, after an extensive study of the author's papers, a revised three-volume edition of A la recherche du temps perdu was published in the Bibliothèque de la Pléiade of Editions Gallimard, Paris, restoring passages previously omitted and making numerous corrections. Terence Kilmartin has, in the current translation based on the Pléiade edition, added the omitted passages and made corrections while preserving the Moncrieff translation of the first six books as much as possible.
