Im Spätsommer 1931 übersiedelte er nach Paris. Sieben Jahre später verließ er Europa und wurde für den Rest seines Lebens in New York ansässig. Was Künstler wirklich und wahrhaft erleben, erleben sie in ihrer Kunst. Den Bildergebnissen zufolge müssen die dreißiger Jahre für Thöny eine überaus glückliche und erfüllte Zeit gewesen sein. Was er damals künstlerisch leistete, war ihm zuvor nur selten gelungen. Auch später in Amerika ist kaum Vergleichliches nachgefolgt. Was so von Thönys malerischem Werk behauptet werden kann, gilt gleicherweise für seine Zeichnungen, die in den Rötelblättern zur "Französischen Revolution" gipfeln, die ihn von 1932 bis 1937 beschäftigt haben. In Paris war Thöny eine Welt des Lichtes und der Farben aufgegangen, "groß und zart zugleich" (wie er es selber empfand). Zuvor in Graz hatte er schwermütige, meist dunkelfarbige Bilder gemalt: Nachtansichten der Murufer, allerhand bedeutungsschwere Brücken-Situationen, Gruppen und Begegnungen einer anderen (sinnträchtigen) Art oder die Tristesse eines Schulhofes. Bald nach der Rückkehr Thönys nach Graz waren dort die fortschrittlichen Geister zusammengerückt und hatten 1923 die Grazer Secession gegründet. Wilhelm Thöny wurde ihr erster Präsident. Vielleicht hat er seine erste Parisreise 1929 auch in der Absicht unternommen, persönliche Verbindungen in einer Stadt zu suchen, die damals das Mekka aller neuen Kunst war. In Paris entstanden damals lavierte Tuschfederzeichnungen, die sich von ähnlichen Grazer Blättern wenig unterscheiden .
