Hardcover. Condizione: As New. Condizione sovraccoperta: As New. 1st Edition. First edition / First printing. Signed by Judge Dwyer on the front free end-paper page. Black paper-covered boards. xiv, 237 pages. Very fine in very fine dust jacket. Purchased from the estate of Former Washington Governor and U. S. Senator Dan Evans. One of the nation's most respected federal judges. Dwyer authored many landmark opinions, including the controversial 1991 decision protecting the spotted owl. His decision forced U.S. Forest Service officials to reduce timber harvests by 75 percent. He ruled Washington State term limits were unconstitutional. "You are not in it to try to please those who brought about your appointment or to try to displease those who were opposed to it. None of that has anything to do with it." This book was published in late January 2002. Dwyer died from cancer February 12, 2002. Signed by Author(s).…

Aggiungi al carrelloThe first letter 4pp., 12mo, with cross writing on frist page, and the second 3pp., 12mo. Both bifoliums. The second letter with its envelope, with penny red and postmarks, addressed by Dickson to 'Travers Twiss Esq D. C. L. | No. 19 Park Lane | London'. Both items in good condition, lightly aged and worn. The first letter concerns Dr Edward Thompson, Vicar of Kington, who has been complained about by his curate 'Mr. Clelan', resulting in a report in a newspaper. Dickson writes: 'Kington, you may remember, rejoices in the notorious Dr. Thompson for its Incumbent, through an ill-fated exchange to whch., in my ignorance on my first coming to the See, I consented. The present Curate, however, Mr. Clelan is a very respectable man, and I consider myself fortunate in having a man there, who appears to do his duty in the Parish & to be acceptable to the people. What the particular occurrence is on whch the difficulty about which he consults occurred, I am not aware, not habing seen the Hereford newspaper containing the Report or reference to it.' He continues discussing the matter, with reference to 'Mr. Parry [.] who busies himself much for the good of Kington & has establish [sic] a library for the inhabitants & compiled a memoir of the place.' The second letter begins: 'I am informed through a letter of Mr. Dunning addressed to Mr. Evans, that Mr. Reed has written to the ABp. [Archbishop] complaining, that the requirement of the Act respecting the notice to be given to the Ch. Warden of the Parish & Registrar of the as to the removing of the revocation of the License both from the Parish Registry & the Diocesan has not been complied with.' He gives more details and asks for Twiss's 'opinion as to this point', commenting: 'In this case it does seem a hardship to be obliged to stultify oneself by so formally condemning one's previous act.' A postscript refers to 'a report at Leominster that Mr. Reed has had the influence of a lady of the name of Parnell a connexion of the AB.p, in his favour - & that this Lady supports the man with supplies of money. Probably she has been a patient of his in London at some time.'.…
[William Latey, QC, jurist and journalist.] Autograph Letter Signed ('Wim Latey') to Clement King Shorter, regarding petitions for a civil list pension for his mother, the widow of editor John Latey.
William Latey (1885-1976), QC, jurist [Clement King Shorter (1857-1926), editor; John Latey (1842-1902), journalist, son of John Lash Latey (1808-1891), editor of the Illustrated London News]

Aggiungi al carrello4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. A long and detailed letter, beginning: 'The situation is not quite as we thought it. Yesterday I saw Mr. Higgs at Downing Street and he explained to me all the circumstances concerning the consideration of Mrs. Latey's petitions. | The suggestion emanating from him, with the Prime Minister's concurrence, is as follows.' The plan outlined, as Mrs Latey is not eligible for the pension, is for a fund to be established for her, to which 'the Prime Minister would add [.] a sum from Royal Bounty - the whole to be sunk in an annuity for her. | The idea of losing this chance of a subsidy from the State is not a pleasant one, but it would be very distasteful for me and my brothers to appeal to people upon whom we have no shadow of a claim, just because they have been friends or admirers of our Father.' A capital sum of around £300 would only give an annuity of £20 or £30 a year, and he would decline to proceed if this were the case, suggesting that the capital be paid to his mother in installments until he and his brothers are 'able to make her comfortable'., adding: 'I have no doubt the Institute of Journalists and theh Newspaper Press Fund would co-operate, and doubtless the I.L.N. would contribute.' The letter continues for another three paragraphs. William Latey's distinguished career, beginning in journalism and ending at the bar, is outlined in his entry in Who Was Who. For more on John Latey, a leading figure in the world of Victorian journalism and founder of the London Press Club, see his entry in the Oxford DNB. Shorter had succeeded John Lash Latey as editor of the Illustrated London News, and had on occasion worked with his son.…

Softcover, bound in printed self wraps. An uncut 19 inch high by 23-3/4 inch wide folded folio sheet containing 16 pages, including the covers. The top edge is slightly creased and there are a couple of minor spots of foxing. A near fine uncut pamphlet. An anti-slavery champion while serving in the Senate, Salmon Portland Chase (1808-1873) was a U.S. Senator from Ohio from 1849 to 1855 and served as Ohio's Governor from 1856 to 1860. He was appointed as secretary of the Treasury by Abraham Lincoln, serving from 1861 to 1864 before being appointed to and serving as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court from 1864 to 1873. He was elected to the Senate on the Free Soil Party ticket to bring pressure on Northern Democrats to force them to oppose the extension of slavery. An anti-slavery champion, he argued against the Compromise of 1850 and the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854. Consisting of 5 separated bills passed by Congress in order to temporarily diffuse tensions between the slave and free states, the Compromise of 1850 was designed by Whig senator Henry Clay with Democratic senator Stephen A. Douglas to outline how to handle slavery in the territories acquired from the Mexican-American War, determining which would be free or slave states and strengthening the fugitive slave laws.…

Aggiungi al carrelloAlthough he later repudiated his position, Mackintosh is notable for having defended the French Revolution from Edmund Burke's strictures. See the two men's entries in the Oxford DNB. With regard to Maurice's oriental studies, it is worth noting that Mackintosh was Recorder of Bombay, 1804-1811. The three items are in good condition, lightly aged and worn and folded for postage. The last two show slight evidence of the breaking of the wafer, and the last has minor traces of brown paper mount. All three are bifoliums, and all are signed 'James Mackintosh'. ONE ('Serle Street Lincolns Inn August 13th.'): 3pp, 4to. Addressed to 'Reverend Mr Maurice / Twickenham'. He begins by explaining the reasons why he will be unable to see Maurice at Twickenham before leaving town for the autumn, when he will 'got to Wales on a visit to a Friend in Monmouthshire'. He continues, with reference to Beloe: 'From what I have seen of Mr Beloe & heard of his Lady I cannot but regret that I have mist [sic] an opportunity of passing a day in their Company.' The letter continues with reference to the bearer of the letter 'Mr Watson' (a 'College Companion' of Mackintosh's, who 'has since taken orders (if that be not too high a word for a presbyterian ordination in the church of Scotland'). Watson has returned from Jamaica, and Mackintosh enquires how he should proceed with regard to approaching the Bishop of London for Anglican ordination through Lord Balcarras, 'Mr Nares [Robert Nares (1753-1829)] & Mr Beloe' (i.e. Robert Nares (1753-1829) and William Beloe (1756-1817), editors of the British Critic). TWO ('Charlotte Street / Monday Eight OClock P.M.'): 1p, 8vo. Addressed to 'Revd. Mr Maurice / Low Layton / Essex'. With two faint postmarks and broken wafer. He has received Maurice's 'parcel' and will avail himself of his 'hints'. Presumably regarding a review he is writing of a work by Maurice, he states that he had 'determined to divide the Critique into two Articles': 'You may be assured that nothing shall limit praises which my heart or head concur on bestowing but the recollection that if they appear excessive they may prove injurious by being thought partial & insincere'. THREE ('Wednesday'). 3pp, 4to. Addressed to 'Revd Thomas Maurice / Great Russell Street' [i.e. at the British Museum]. With regard to a 'Subject so interesting' to Maurice he regrets 'our postponing a visit to Christie's [the London auction house of James Christie (1730-1803)] till we could both go which the Obstinacy of Mrs M's illness has hitherto prevented'. As his wife 'ventures abroad' for the first time that day (she is going to Warwick at the weekend), he suggests visiting the auction house that Friday. He laments 'the loss of a £50 bank note which I was unlucky enough to drop between Hammersley's in Pall [Mall] where I received it & my own house'. He describes the 'usual precautions' he has taken. 'You may easily conceive that this accident has not a little deranged me'. Postscript: 'I return the proof sheet & plate with thans for the gratification of curiosity'.…

Aggiungi al carrello1 page. Ottoman Turkish fatwa, signed by Ebussuud Efendi at lower right. Black ink on paper. Signed in the hand of the Chief Jurist and Shaikh al-Islam of Suleiman the Magnificent: a legal fatwa in elegant sulus script, with gold dust embellishments. - Ebussuud Efendi rose through the Ottoman ranks to become the highest-ranking legal scholar in the empire. In his time in office, he issued thousands of first-hand legal rulings on nearly every possible subject. This fatwa asks Ebussuud Efendi to settle a complex dispute: two siblings inherited a plot of farmland, but did not cultivate it themselves. Instead, a third individual farmed the land, but did not give the siblings their share for twelve years. Ebussuud Efendi is asked to settle the rights of the siblings for the twelve unpaid years. - As chief jurist, these legal rulings were a regular task. Ebussuud's signature appears at the lower right; often, he simply noted a yes or no answer as his ruling, but each new fatwa established a precedent and reinforced the legal code of the Ottomans, within the framework of classical Islamic jurisprudence. - Removed from mounting, with faint traces of glue to reverse. Creased, with small closed tear along one crease. In very good condition.…

Aggiungi al carrello5pp., foolscap 8vo, each on a separate leaf. Fair, on aged paper, stapled together in one corner, but with the last leaf detached. The subject is not compulsory military service but the role of the civil servant (see the conclusion, quoted below). The first paragraph reads: 'Lord Chorley said that there is a close connection between the sort of function which the machinery of government performs in any society and the civil service which is required in that society. As one who had experience both from the political and from the administrative angle he would endeavour to pick out the salient points.' On p.4: 'It would already be difficult to reconstruct the National Health Service in any radical sort of way, and in a few years time it might become almost impossible; that was one of the drawbacks of organisation upon a nation wide basis, without previous experimentation.' The conclusion reads: 'The civil servant had to realise that he was at once the leader and the servant in the modern community. In modern leadership the General plays as one of the team, and a great part of his job is to make his individual followers realise that they are a team, and to give them a proper appreciation of the objectives which the team is striving to attain. That was of paramount importance in the domestic state to which we were all committed and if we failed to bring it about we might as well see the end of the western democratic civilization for which our generation had a special responsibility.' From the Chorley papers. The document is undated, but there is a reference to 'the arrangements made between 1945-50 for running national industry', and a reference in anothe document among Chorley's papers dates the talk to 1952.…
