Aggiungi al carrelloHardback. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. First Edition. "Nobel: The Man and His Prizes" is a hefty book that some may feel still manages to only scratch the surface of its extensive subject. It was copyrighted in 1950 by the Nobel Foundation in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first Nobel Prizes; this 1951 publication by the University of Oklahoma Press appears to be the first edition, at least in the United States. The book is really much more about the prizes than about Alfred Nobel himself. The biographical information about him is relatively brief, but it is written by Henrik Schück, who wrote the "official" biography of the man in the 1920s, and by Ragnar Sohlman, Nobel's assistant, one of two men he trusted to execute his will in such a way that the Nobel Foundation was created and the prizes were awarded. After that, the remaining 500-plus pages of the book are devoted to the Nobel Foundation and the history of the prizes. Each chapter about each prizeliterature, physiology or medicine, chemistry, physics, and peace (the first prize for economics wasn't awarded until 1969)is written by the respective chairs of the prize committees. In most cases, by giving the history of to whom the awards were given and why, they wind up giving a history of the advances in their respective fields, even when it comes to that nebulous field of "peace." The chapter on the prize for literature is the shortest, which makes it a bit ironic that this is an association copy for an author of some fame in Oklahoma. A laid-in card says that the book was given, "With the compliments of the University of Oklahoma Press" while the name W.S. Campbell and the date Oct. 20, [19]51 is written on the front flysheet and a printed bookplate with the name Walter Stanley Campbell is pasted on the inside front cover. Campbell was a novelist and historian of the Old West who frequently wrote under the pen name Stanley Vestal from the 1920s through the 1950s. He also was an English professor who established a successful professional writing course at the University of Oklahoma and who wrote several textbooks on the subject. Our copy is unusual in that it is NOT an ex library copy and therefore is unmarked except for the aforementioned owner's signature, a touch of soiling, and a few blemishes on the pages that appear to have come from the printing process. The dark blue cloth binding is in excellent condition, with a slight bit of shelfwear around the top and bottom of the covers and spine but no other flaws. The gold lettering on the spine is still quite bright. The binding is tight and square and none of the pages are loose or damaged. A second laid-in card is included inside the front covers, a business reply card to order book from a bookstore in Arizona. The dust jacket has seen better days but is intact, with no large rips putting it in danger. Instead, a number of small tears and chips go around the edges of the dust jacket cover and spine and there is a bad scuff mark that goes down the length of the spine of the dust jacket. There is also some soiling, particularly on the back panel. However, the images and text on the front, back, and both flaps are completely unaffected by this damage. Photos forthcoming or on request in the interim.…

Aggiungi al carrelloCloth. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. Second Revised and Enlarged Edition. Hardback. Ticks and underlining in pencil to some pages. Previous owners name sticker to inside cover. Mark to inside front cover from removal of old sellotape. Slightly sunned spine. Blue cloth with silver lettering. This book gave the history of the first fifty years of prize-giving written by prominent Swedish cionnaisseurs and of the prize-awarding activities of the five Nobel domains. The story of the achievements which had been honoured with Nobel Prizes was at the same to a very large degree a review of the remarkable progress made in the five Nobel domains. In the book was also incorporated a short biography of Alfred Nobel by the late professor Henrik Schuck, Sweidsh Academy, and once Chair-man of the Board of Directors of the Nobel Foundation; further an account of the birth of the Foundation given by one of its principal architects the late Ragnar Sohlman, collaborator and friend of Alfred Nobel and later executor of his will; finally the Executive Director of the Foundation since 1948, Nils K. Stahle, summarized its functions and activities. Now, about ten years later, a new issue in the English language, brought up to date by the same authors, is appearing at the Elsevier Publishing Company, Amsterdam. Thus an account of six decades - 1901 - 1961 - of Nobel Prizes has been made available. 690 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.).…
