Aggiungi al carrelloThe letter must have been written in 1855, as Fox Maule (later Earl of Dalhousie) was appointed Secretary of State for War on 8 February of that year, and Napier died on 16 September. 4pp, 16mo. Bifolium with black border. Loss to part of second leaf caused by removal from mount, resulting in loss of a few words of text, otherwise in good condition. Begins: 'In consequence of a letter from my Son William of your regt. [i.e. the King's Own Scottish Borderers] stating your wish to be appointed a Paymaster to the Out Pensioners, I wrote to my friend Mr Fox Maule the Secy. at War, & herewith give you the answer which I am sorry to say holds out but little prospect of success'. He proceeds to transcribe Fox Maule's letter, dated 'War Office | 8th. July', adding: 'You had better not depend much upon this, but use all other interest you may have in that quarter, as the more Irons [y]ou have in the fire the [bette]r!' He concludes 'Lady Napier [jo]ins me in best compliments to Mrs. Hamilton'. In a postscript he asks for Hamilton to give the Napiers' best regards to a 'friend', whose name has been torn away, 'at Chatham'. Napier's son Major-General William Craig Emilius Napier (1818-1903) would end his career as Governor of the Royal Military College at Sandhurst.

Begins: 'In the Eastern country there was a King of the race of Sun called Annasockkaynathan [oriental characters here] the name of whose wife was Manonmasunthary [oriental characters here] who was delivered of a wonderful child who was born with teeth, and dressed him togehter with breasts (full grown) at which the King was astonished and sent to the wise men enquiring of the miraculous birth of the child'. Two: 'Story of Manderapaudey'. 6pp., foolscap 8vo. In poor condition, heavily worn with loss of text. Begins: 'In a City called Vecroomakasum, there lived a Bramany, who had an only daughter, who was a beautiful and accomplished young woman; her Father intended to bestow her hand on a young man, who was in every manner able to support her, and who was well informed, and had Received a proper education'. Three: 'The History of Santiraksen'. 22pp., foolscap 8vo. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. Begins: 'A certain king who reigned over a realm called Kalatasem, was long since without having an Issue, and in Consequence his wife brought forth a child, the prognosticators have prognosticated, that child has been unfortunate to the Parent, and admonished the king to transport the same otherwise the Parent and all other relations will die in a six months'. Four: Headed: 'the craft first | of making two intimates to alienate'. 16pp., foolscap 8vo. Ends abruptly on p.16, with catch word, and clearly the first part only. Written in a closer hand than the other items, presumably at a later date. Begins: 'In a city called was a merchant man Named Vartaman who has thought to peregrinate and merchandize, so he has loaded his merchandizing upon a cart and coupled to it, two oxen'. From the Papers of William Sibbald, perhaps the translator.

On one side of piece of laid paper rougly 11 cm squarer, with partial watermark 'J G'. In fair condition, lightly aged and creased, with traces of mount on blank reverse. Folded twice. Reads: 'London March 7 1842 / F M The Duke of Wellington presents his Compliments to Miss Busby / Not being resident at Oxford he has no Controul [sic] over any matter relating to the Bodleian Library. / Miss Busby should apply to the Vice Chancellor. -' The identity of the actual writer of the letter has been questioned in pencil at the foot of page with 'Qy Secy' (i.e. 'Query? Secretary'), and the doubt does not seem unjustified. It may well be that this item is in the Duke's hand - the writing certainly has his characteristic slope - but although it is superficially similar, there are several elements in the calligraphy that raise a strong doubt: the 'L' and 'M' of the date 'London March'; all four initials in 'F M The Duke', the fact that the second 'l' in 'Wellington' is looped, and in particular the fact that the 'r' in 'resident' and 'n' in 'no' begin below the line of writing, which is not a characteristic observed in the Duke's writing at any period. On wove paper with watermark 'CANSELL | 1830'. The letter - written with energy and some resentment - refers to Admiral Sir William Parker (1781-1866), who was made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath in 1815. It is headed 'Private & Confidential' and begins: 'My dear Macdonald | In reflection I decided not to ask for the rank you suggested, because I thought it might be considered a personal favor, & not an act which conferred personal dignity on one of the King's Agents, & I detest asking for favors, especially from persons unwilling to grant them.' He continues: 'Lord Palmeston ought to see & judge himself whether or not the public service is benefitted by such rank being conferred, my own belief is that when An Agent goes amongst these Military Nations, where Military rank is alone considered, the higher the rank of the Agent the easier he can do his duty.' Nevertheless Napier will not ask, '& without asking nothing is given in England'. He continues: 'I think I was ill used in not having the 2d Order of the Bath given to me when it was given to Adl. Parker. We were colleagues on the same station, he a New Admiral, I a Brigadier General with fuller powers than he had, for when two Ministers like Asses sent our fleet to Sea where it remained at a great expense (from near 2 [?]) to the Nation I alone had the Power to call it into the Tagus, & did call it into the Tagus, on my own responsiblity, which act was approved of by the Ministry. However they gave Parker the Bath & not me, but I certainly shall not ask for it. Nor have I ever, nor shall I ever complain of not having it, & say to to you & to you alone in strict Confidence'.

Aggiungi al carrelloFour interesting Peninsular War items, from a collection of Beresford material. In 1813 the Duke of Wellington described Beresford as 'the ablest man I have yet seen in the army'. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. The four items are in good condition, lightly aged and worn (but see descriptions of Items One and Three), and folded for postage. ONE: Apparent Autograph Draft of Letter. 'Abranles July 4. 1809'. 2pp, 4to. On laid Whatman paper. Reverse somewhat grubby with glue stains (from display in an album?) at foot of reverse of leaf. Written in a hurried hand, similar to other examples consulted (for example in 'd' shapes, ampersand, use of long s and spelling 'untill'), and with one emendation supporting the idea that the item is a draft and not a copy ('he does not intend further' is altered to 'he does not intend drawing further upon me'), as does the fact that the text ends abruptly mid-page. Whether in his hand or not, clearly written by Beresford, during the build up to the Battle of Talavera. Reads: 'Sir / You will be pleased to remain here with Mr Posleton, Clerk, for the purpose of paying the Checks which the Commissary General or any Person authorised by him may draw upon me - which you will pay from the money I shall leave in your hands & when you can ascertain from the Commissary General that he does not intend drawing further upon me I wish you to follow me as quickly as possible by the enclosed route - I have already made a requisition from Mr Asst. Comy Ogilvie (in charge of the Car & Mule department) for twenty-seven ox or mule cars but I understand from him that there are none of either description at present[.] You will therefore request the requisition in writing for whatever number you may want to bring forward the Military Chest untill you receive them - you will be guided in your departure from here by the Commissary Generals departure to whom you will apply on this Head. / I wish you to assist Mr Asst. [?] in procuring the means of following me as expeditiously as he can - / I shall leave under your charge in the Military Chest [ends here, halfway down the second page]'. TWO: Copy Letter. 'Elvas 16th. March 1812'. To 'His Excellency / The Marshal Genl. / The Earl of Wellington K.B. & / & & & K. T. S.' Ends 'Signed W. C. B.' (Like the rest of the letter the 'signature' is not in Beresford's hand.) 2pp, 8vo. Reads: 'My Lord / I have been favored with your Lordships Communication from Don [Miguel?] Peniza Forjas relative to the Arsenal at Oporto. I herewith have the Honor to return the Papers alluded to, & to state that I have repeatedly represented to the Governors of this Kingdom the inutility, & inefficiency of the Arsenal at Oporto, that both on account of its being so far removed from Inspection, & the great expense attending its Establishment, it has ever been my opinion, that it had better be altogether abolished, & the whole centred in that at Lisbon, which would be easier arranged, & prove of more Utility'. THREE: Copy letter. 'Fuente Guinaldo / 25th. May 1812'. Addressed as Item Two, and 'signed' '(Signed) W. L. Beresford'. 2pp, 8vo. Reverse of leaf with what appears to be light tea staining. He has thought it 'proper to make this Communication for your Lordship's consideration, & decision', since he has received no directions regarding 'the issuing of the Pay, & allowances' of 'the British officers in the Portuguese service'. FOUR: Manuscript 'Extract of a Madrid Gazette - announcing the destruction of the Austrian Army by the French - / 6th May 1809'. 2pp, 12mo. His first two pages relate to family matters, including (perhaps) significant references to "Elizabeth" - James Campbell had a daughter called but he reflects on "the present state of things" including information and opinion that would be censored in later wars. "But when that most desirable period [return home] will arrive it is impossible in the present state of thingseven to guess at. As far as one can judge however I should think it cannot be very distant - Our Reg[imen]t is so very weak that if we do not get reinforcements out we can be of very little use. We have upwards of 260 sick & our men are dying fast- We can produce perhaps 240 on parade including servants &c but [one?] half of the men have suffered so much that if we were to move the would knock up in three days.- As to the Army at large and its probable movements, every body is in the dark. Should we go again into Spain it will be again[st] the wish of almost every officer - The sic[k]ness is really shocking, & could the English public be made acquainted with its extent would certainly make a great noise - I should think since the Army came into Cantonments at least 5000 men must have died by sickness - In short it is dreadful, and we cannot be in a fit state for the field for a long time - In passing by the hospital of the [82nd?] Regt the other day, I saw them digging some graves, & the Serjeant told me they had eight men laying dead that morning - In the field, one passes over dead bodies without feeling much, but when in quarters you see men dropping off by disease in crowds it really makes a man melancholy - I have seen quite enough of what they call honor & glory, and wish I was quietly settles in some [?] cottage at home, where I could dig up my little garden, and poke up my fire, leaving these scenes of death & destruction to those who are fond of them- It is only a few weeks since I joined the Regt and on looking over a list of men that I brought with me from Lisbon, I find there are already 5 dead, & 12 sick in hospital, out of 30.".
