Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 2nd Edition. Very Large Size Book. The story of the US Navy has been filled with drama from the very beginning. Within a few short months of its establishment in 1775 with a handful of small ships and a few dozen seamen the US Navy was harrying its British enemies with great success. As a token of this effectiveness the US Navy's first great triumph, the victory of John Paul Jones and the Bonnehomme Richard over the Sarapis, was won only a few miles from the English coast. The tradition of raiding and harassing attacks was continued in the War of 1812 with the Constitution's defeat of the Java, perhaps the finest of many fine successes. Despite victories in these and other conflicts the Navy was largely neglected until the outbreak of the Civil War when both sides quickly built substantial naval forces. The eventual success of the North's naval blockade was one of the decisive factors ensuring the defeat of the Confederacy. Both navies were at the forefront of the technological development also as the Battle of Hampton Roads between the Monitor and Merrimac shows. Since World War II the US Navy has played an important part in the Korean and Vietnam Wars- emerging from even that most controversial conflict with an untarnished reputation. Most recently the Navy has kept a high profile in support of US policy in the Middle East and Central America and, even without the presently planned expansion, its nuclear carrier battle groups and ballistic missile submarines provide an astonishing and devastating range of capabilities. From the end of the Civil War American eyes began to look abroad and gradually a stronger and still more effective Navy was created. Dewey's victory at Manila Bay and the cruise of the Great White Fleet in 1907-9 marked the US Navy's rise to world rank w (illustratore).…

Aggiungi al carrello3pp., 4to. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Addressed by Brett-James in pencil at the head of the first page to 'Lt Gen Sir Brian Horrocks' and with one manuscript correction. The letter begins: 'I do want to say how interesting and worthwhile I found the broadcast discussion last Sunday evening about the factors which make a good division. All that was said was true and most stimulating, but there are a few points which I should like to add. I served for three years with the 5th Indian Division and had the privilege of writing the Division's history after the war.' He discusses the elements of 'common nationality' and 'tradition and reputation'. On the later subject he recalls 'walking into a canteen the day the Division arrived in the Arakan, its arrival a secret still; we had orders to disguise who we were. The officer in charge of the canteen said at once to us: "I don't need to ask who you chaps are. The 5th Indian Division, I reckon." | We looked duly puzzled at this accurate guess, and he went on: "Nobody else out here wears the Africa Star." | I have not forgotten our pride at this incident.' Another factor discussed is 'the contrbution of the Divisional commander himself to the spirit of the Division'. He remarks: 'I have never forgotten the impatient, desperate, and even illegal efforts made by all ranks, British and Indian, to get back to the Division from hospital and reinforcement camp: they felt that the Division was a home from home in a very real sense.' He concludes: 'Speaking personally, I shall always be thankful that a letter came round to the L of C unit I was with in Syria, asking for volunteers to serve with Indian formations in the Middle East. To have fought with any division would have been better than life in a comparative backwater, and to have served in one of the very very few to fight the Italians, Germans and Japanese (I only know of the 9th Australian and the 7th Armoured Brigade who also did, but there were doubtless one or two others) was a source of still greater satisfaction and pride.'.…

Aggiungi al carrello5½'' x 3½''. Divided back. High gloss monochrome post card. Maud took over as captain of the destroyer Somali in September 1942 when her captain, Jack Eaton, was taken ill. SIGNED by Maud to the rear 'Escort in large Russian Convoy 23/9/42 Torpedoed and taken in tow by another destroyer but Board of Admiralty regrets to announce that having been in tow for 3 days in bad weather ship broke in two and sank. Lieutenant Commander C. D. Maud D.S.C. R.N. in command | 23rd September 1942.' Somali was hit in her engine room and although taken under tow by Ashanti, on 25 September heavy weather broke the destroyer's back and she sank. Maud was rescued by Leading Seaman William Goad, who dived into the freezing water with a rope, for which Goad was awarded the Albert Medal. Of the 102 men on board, only 35 were rescued. Maud had spent an hour in the Arctic water and credited his survival to the fact that he had drunk a bottle of whisky after going overboard. As a result, he ordered men under his command to carry a bottle of whisky, which proved to be a popular order. On 1 December 1942 he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order.
