First Japanese edition of one of the foundational works of cinematic literature, presenting Thea von Harbou's Metropolis alongside Anita Loos's Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Issued as volume 15 of the prestigious series Sekai taishū bungaku zenshū (World Popular Literature) and translated by Hata Toyokichi, the volume marks the first appearance in Japan of von Harbou's science fiction masterpiece, closely associated with Fritz Lang's monumental silent film of 1927. Lang and von Harbou collaborated on the screenplay for Metropolis, then the most expensive film production in German cinema. Though commercially unsuccessful on release, the film is now regarded as one of the most influential works in the history of cinema, celebrated for its visionary portrayal of a futuristic city, its striking Expressionist architecture and costume design, pioneering use of visual effects, and vast, meticulously choreographed crowd scenes. The Japanese edition is richly illustrated, incorporating contemporary film stills that underscore the close relationship between text and screen. Particularly notable are the two plates following the title page: a rare hand coloured film still—the only coloured image published during the earliest phase of the film's reception—and a reproduction of the opening bars of Gottfried Huppertz's original score, accompanied by three black and white portraits. A further ten full page photographic stills appear throughout the text. The original dust jacket is especially striking, adopting the bold Expressionist design created by Willy Reimann for the first German paperback edition. As an artifact of Japan's early engagement with Western modernism, the volume is of exceptional rarity. Few Japanese publications of the 1920s survive in Western collections, and OCLC records only a handful of institutional copies, including those at Columbia University, the University of Southern California, and the National Diet Library in Tokyo. Vintage German programs for the two-part film series "Die Nibelungen," including one for "Die Nibelungen: Siegfried" and one for "Die Nibelungen: Kriemhild's Revenge," produced by German film magazine "Film-Kurier." Text in German. Based on the thirteenth century epic poem "Nibelungenlied." "Film-Kurier" was the first German film journal, published daily beginning in 1919. The journal's classic era lasted until 1933, when its publisher, Alfred Weiner, had to flee Germany due to his Jewish origins. The issues from this era remain striking to this day because they were printed using a gravure reproduction process. Each day's issue would focus on a single film. 9 x 11.75 inches. Issue No. 262 of "Illustrierter Film-Kurier," one of the oldest European film magazines, which ran weekly from 1929 to 1956. Like its German counterpart, "Film-Kurier," each issue focused on a single film and used a gravure process to reproduce images from the film, making for striking images and design. 6 x 9 inches. This copy with an alternate jacket-differing completely with the one referenced in Rössler's "Filmfieber." Rare in dust jacket. Basis for the German silent film classic by Fritz Lang, with a screenplay adapted by von Harbou from her novel. Released in the US as "Woman in the Moon." Like "Metropolis," a novel that was conceived and executed simultaneously with the film. It is also generally recognized as the first serious film to portray space travel (preceded by Georges Melies' equally important but more comic 1902 silent, "La voyage dans la lune"). It was the first film to introduce the basics of rocket travel to a mass audience, including the use of a multi-stage rocket, and was the first instance in a film of a "countdown to zero" being used prior to a rocket launch. Previously filmed in 1921 as the silent film "The Indian Tomb," directed by Joe May and starring Conrad Veidt and Mia May, with a screenplay written by von Harbou and Lang (who was originally slated to direct), and in 1938 as the German film "Der Tiger von Eschnapur," directed by Richard Eichberg, starring Philip Dorn and La Jana. Lang returned to the material some forty years later, and divided the story into two films to avoid the lengthy three and a half hour running time of the original silent film. A German architect travels to the remote Indian city of Eschnapur to oversee work being done at the behest of the Maharajah, and falls in love with a beautiful temple dancer, who the Maharajah also loves.
