Quel est le rôle des thermes dans la cité ? Comment s'insèrent-ils dans l'urbanisme et dans la vie politique, en tant que lieux de rassemblement et de propagande ? Qu'en est-il de la permanence des activités sportives ? Comment s'organisent les chantiers, véritables laboratoires de formes architecturales, qui procèdent à l'érection des grands thermes ? Dans quelle mesure les thermes, microcosmes et scènes du pouvoir, offrent-ils aux luttes idéologiques un terrain de prédilection pour s'exprimer ? Telles sont les questions fondamentales et variées auxquelles la présente étude fournit des réponses qui outrepassent son strict cadre géographique et chronologique en s'appuyant en outre sur un catalogue archéologique et un corpus épigraphique rassemblés et harmonisés pour la première fois.
