Mit Druckwidmung an Alexander von Humboldt, "dem tiefen Forsche und umfassenden Kenner der Natur!". Theodor Friedrich Baltz, "Regimentsarzt. zu Berlin, war am 15. Januar 1785 zu Bernau bei Berlin geboren, wurde, im 12. Jahre elternlos geworden, von wohlthätigcn Leuten seines Heimatsortes, namentlich einem Wundarzte und einem Geistlichen, unterstützt und unterrichtet, begann im Sommer 1805 Studien bei dem Collegium medico-chirurgicum in Berlin, trat aber bereits am 1. October 1805 als Lazareth-Chirurgus bei einem preussischen Feldlazareth ein, diente als solcher bis 1806 in Hannover und machte in demselben Jahre die Schlacht bei Auerstädt und die Capitulation von Lübeck mit. Er befreite sich aus der französischen Kriegsgefangenschaft, ging im Jahre 1807 von Berlin zu Fuss nach Königsberg, diente daselbst und in Memel bis zum Frühjahr 1808 in den dortigen Lazarethen und wurde dann als Zögling in die Pepiniere zu Berlin aufgenommen. Nach 3 1/2 Jährigem Studium, in den letzten 2 Jahren zugleich bei der Berliner Universität, wurde er 1812 zum Oberarzt bei gedachtem Institut ernannt, war während des Feldzuges von 1815 Stabsarzt und Dirigent eines fliegenden Lazareths und sammelte in dieser Zeit umfangreiche Erfahrungen über die in der Armee herrschende Augenentzündung, die er, nachdem er auf dein Rückmärsche in Heidelberg (Deccmber 1815) die Doctorwürde erlangt, zum Gegenstände seiner Dissertation: "De ophthalmia catarrJiali bellica" (Heidelberg 1816, 4. c. tab.) machte und auch deutsch "Die Augenentzündung unter den Truppen in den Kriegsjahren 1813-1815 u. s. w." (Berlin 1816) erscheinen liess. Er bearbeitete diesen Gegenstand, der damals zu den heftigsten Streitigkeiten Veranlassung gab, ausser in einem Aufsatze in RUST'S Magazin (Bd. Er befreite sich aus der französischen Kriegsgefangenschaft, ging im Jahre 1807 von Berlin zu Fuss nach Königsberg, diente daselbst und in Memel bis zum Frühjahr 1808 in den dortigen Lazarethen und wurde dann als Zögling in die Pepiniere zu Berlin aufgenommen. Nach 3 1/2 Jährigem Studium, in den letzten 2 Jahren zugleich bei der Berliner Universität, wurde er 1812 zum Oberarzt bei gedachtem Institut ernannt, war während des Feldzuges von 1815 Stabsarzt und Dirigent eines fliegenden Lazareths und sammelte in dieser Zeit umfangreiche Erfahrungen über die in der Armee herrschende Augenentzündung, die er, nachdem er auf dein Rückmärsche in Heidelberg (Deccmber 1815) die Doctorwürde erlangt, zum Gegenstände seiner Dissertation: "De ophthalmia catarrJiali bellica" (Heidelberg 1816, 4. c. tab.) machte und auch deutsch "Die Augenentzündung unter den Truppen in den Kriegsjahren 1813-1815 u. s. w." (Berlin 1816) erscheinen liess. Er bearbeitete diesen Gegenstand, der damals zu den heftigsten Streitigkeiten Veranlassung gab, ausser in einem Aufsatze in RUST'S Magazin (Bd. XIV, 1823), noch einmal in einer von der Utrechter Gesellschaft der Künste und Wissenschaften gekrönten Preisschrift "Ueber die Entstehung, Beschaffenheit und zweckmässige Behandlung der Augenentzündung, welche seit mehreren Jahren unter den Soldaten einiger europäischer Armeen geherrscht hat u. s. w." (Utrecht 1824, auch holländisch)' und erhielt für dieselbe noch mehrere goldene Medaillen. - Im April 1818 war Baltz zum Regiments-Chirurgus befördert worden, hatte sich aber, um in Berlin bleiben zu können, mit der Stelle beim Garde-Schützen-Bataillon daselbst begnügt. Bereits zwei Jahre später trat er mit. einer Reformschrift an die Oeffentlichkeit: "Freimüthige Worte über die inneren und wesentlichsten Verhältnisse in der königlich preussischen Militär-Medicinalverfassung u.s.w." (Berlin 1820), welcher noch in demselben Jahre ein "Erster Nachtrag zu der Schrift u.s.w." folgte, in welchen Schriften er Reductionen und Ersparnisse vorschlug, namentlich aber gegen die aus dem Titel des folgenden Aufsatzes ersichtliche, bald darauf auch abgeschaffte, den militärärztlichen Stand herabwürdigende Einrichtung ankämpfte, nämlich: "Sendschreiben in Betreff der Medicinalverfassung bei der königlich preussischen Armee, mit besonderer Rücksicht auf die Medicingroschen-Einrichtung, nach welcher diese Gelder den Aerzten gezahlt werden, letztere den kranken Soldaten die Arzneien selbst liefern und was sie dabei ersparen, zu ihrem, eigenen Unterhalte zu benutzen genöthigt sind" (Allg. Anzeiger der Deutschen, 1821).
