P. von Hahn-Rottenstein 1831-1891) war eine russlanddeutsche Okkultistin und Tochter eines mecklenburgischen Offiziers in zaristisc…hen Diensten, die eine synkretistische Weltanschauung entwickelte und maßgeblich zur Begründung der modernen anglo-indischen Theosophie beitrug. Ihre beiden Hauptwerke, vorliegendes und das zuvor erschienene "Isis Unveiled" (1877) üben bis in heutige Zeit großen Einfluß auf viele Bereiche der modernen Esoterik aus. 1875 gründete sie zusammen mit Henry Steel Olcott in New York den geheimen "Mircacle-Club" aus dem im selben Jahr die Theosophische Gesellschaft hervorging, deren Ziel es war durch die Ergründung und Aneignung angeblich "alter Geheimlehren" eine neue Weltreligion zu schaffen. 1876 wurde die Gesellschaft jedoch bereits wieder aufgelöst und fusionierte mit der indisch-hinduistischen Reformbewegung Arya Samaj zur Theosophical Society of the Arya Samaj of India, deren Sitz ab 1882 in Adyar bei Madras war und dort verfasste Blavatsky auch ihre beiden Hauptwerke. Sie kann als die wohl bedeutendste Persönlichkeit bei der Begründung der modernen westlichen Esoterik angesehen werden, die auf ihren zahlreichen Reisen in Europa, Amerika und Asien die unterschiedlichsten Berufe ausübte, als nach dem Tod des Vaters dessen finanzielle Unterstützung ausblieb. Sie beschäftigte sich mit Okkultismus, Spritismus, Schamanismus, dem Voodookult etc. bevor sie begann esoterische Lehren zu verbreiten. Im Zusammenhang mit ihren Schriften und Aussagen wurden aber auch immer wieder Betrugs- unc Plagiatsvorwürfe laut, die ihr Ansehen massiv beschädigten und die Theosophische Gesellschaft spalteten. Daraus gingen dann wieder andere Lehren hervor, wie etwa Rudolf Steiners Anthroposophie und auch Vordenker der Nazis, Ariosophen wie etwa Lanz von Liebenfels oder Guido List bedienten sich für ihre Rassentheorien bei Blavatsky. Allerdings kann man der Theosophie selbst keine solchen rassistischen Konzepte vorwerfen, Blavatsky bewunderte ja außereuropäische Kulturen, und die in ihren Werken ausgebreitete theosophische Rassenlehre ist eigentlich eher einem allgemeinen wissenschaftlichen Zeitgeist geschuldet. " Le terme de théosophie est souvent associé aux premiers peintres non-figuratifs. Pourtant peu de critiques ont approfondi la question, estimant que le f…ait relevait de la sphère personnelle et non d'un intérêt plastique. Néanmoins, l'émergence d'une nouvelle forme de peinture est intimement liée aux idées d'une époque : à la fin du XIXe siècle, la rapide industrialisation est ressentie comme une perte spirituelle pour beaucoup. Fondée en 1875 par H. P. Blavatsky, la Société Théosophique concrétisait ces nouvelles aspirations. Elle prétendait concilier les contraires : la Religion et la Science, l'Orient et l'Occident pour retrouver une Unité Originelle. Elle contribua à populariser les philosophies de l'Inde. Les ouvrages de Leadbeater et de Besant contenaient de nombreuses illustrations relatives à l'aura, ce halo coloré entourant tout être humain. Rudolf Steiner, éditeur du " Traité des couleurs " de Goethe, sut en tirer des applications pratiques. À partir de là, les artistes disposaient d'un répertoire plastique : couleurs et formes pouvaient exprimer directement le spirituel. Par exemple, Kandinsky évoquera la " nécessité intérieure " ; Mondrian recherchera l'harmonie à travers les oppositions perçues comme complémentaires ; tous font état d'une idéologie donnée pour justifier le passage vers une nouvelle forme de peinture.
