Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: New. 2009 N&M Press reprint (original pub 1812). SB. xii+276 pp + MapPublished Price £14.50 Published in 1812, this is an extremely early account of the Peninsular War by Capt. William Stothert, an infantry adjutant with the Third Foot Guards, who was later killed at the Battle of Waterloo. Published in the form of letters written home to the authorâs family, Stothertâs narrative relates his entire experiences of the war, from leaving Portsmouth in 1809, to his return three years later. In between he witnesses the assumption of command by Wellington (then Sir Arthur Wellesley); the campaigns in north Portugal; the battle of Talavera; the siege and storming of Ciudad Roderigo; the battle of Busaco; the retreat to the lines of Torres Vedras; the battle of Fuentes dâOnoro; the battle of Albuera; and the siege of Badajoz. Stothert does not hold back in his denunciations of French barbarities against the Spanish civilian population; but he is equally unsparing of praise for the enemyâs bravery in battle. A rare and valuable insight into a savage war.

Cloth. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. First Edition. 269 pages/illus; Founded in 1801, the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry was one of the premier international fraternal orders of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. For more than two hundred years, Freemasonry in America helped define social and cultural arrangements that affected the development of civic life and philanthropic institutions. In Valley of the Craftsmen, the story of "higher degree" Freemasonry is depicted through portraits, official papers, material objects, photographs, buildings, and stagecraft. Featuring many previously unpublished images, Valley of the Craftsmen begins with rare illustrations of the English and French philosophical sources that were projected upon an American landscape vitalized and transformed by the concept of fraternity. Clean.

It is partly biographical, but also contributes to the historiography of mathematics education and addresses closely related questions such as: what is mathematics and where does it start? Which role does mathematics play in society and what influence does it have on the prevailing views concerning its accompanying didactics? Hans Freudenthal (1905-1990), professor in mathematics, scientist, literator, but above all mathematics-educator, was inextricably linked to the changes which took place in mathematics education and didactics during the second half of the last century. His diversity as a scientist and his inexhaustible efforts to establish the didactics of mathematics as a seriously pursued science, made Freudenthal's influence in this area considerable. He foresaw an essential, practical role for mathematics in everyone's life, encouraging students to discover and create mathematics themselves, instead of imposing a ready-made mathematical system. The theory of mathematics education thus developed in the Netherlands would gain world fame in the following decades.
