Original half calf and moiré on Turkish doubled marble patterned paper, flat spine with gilt-stamped floral cartouche enclosing the title "Lakes" and the volume number. Covers rubbed and scuffed, previous owner's tiny ink name at head of front blanks dated Feb'y 17th, 1865, on the verso and recto of a blank fly sheet in each volume is very neatly handwritten in two columns, an alphabetical index (with page number), of the volume's plates. Scattered foxing throughout, occasional offsetting, otherwise a very good set.

Original green pebbled morocco with gilt tooling and ruling along edges of covers, gilt lettering, ruling and tooling on spines; raised bands, and protected by modern mylar…. Gilt edges. Endpapers yellow. Engraved vignette titles. The author, John Carne, left England in 1821, and spent much time traveling in Israel/Palestine and in Constantinople, Greece, the Levant and Egypt. It is one of the few works of that time to include what is present-day Lebanon. The book, with plates by Bartlett, Purser, and Allom, was published some time after Carne returned to England, initially in thirty parts of four plates each. Many of the plates in volume 3 are after drawings by Thomas Allom, commissioned by the publishers to complete the illustrations. This work contains 2 full page maps and 118 steel-engraved plates depicting views throughout Syria and Asia Minor, all protected by tissue-guards. All volumes with list of engravings at front, volume three with general index at rear. Binding with light rubbing and scuffing along edges, slightly more pronounced at top foredge of front cover of volume three. All three volumes lightly starting at inside covers but firm. Volume one with engraved bookplate on inside front cover, signed Alfred Bilbrough, May, 1908. All three volumes with medium seize O printed to front free endpapers. Volume three with bump at lower spine, lightly at foredge, and some pages and plates with water stains at top margins, not affecting images. Eighty of the engravings are fine with none or very light foxing in margins. Thirty-six engravings with light or minor damp-staining in plates, four engravings with heavy damp-staining in images. Blocks lightly age-toned.

Later, but superior edition of these classic titles, first published in Paris in 1832-35. These editions published 1847-49. . 3 volumes in two. Quarto. Volume I and II: Pp. 80 + 72; Volume III: 96pp. Illustrated with 215 full-page steel engravings and one steel-engraved title vignette, not included in the pagination. Extra-engra…ved common title at beginning of volume I; Separate printed title pages for each volume. Publisher's full dark brown leather, extensive gilt decoration at center of covers and corners, spine with extensive gilt decoration and title, inner gilt dentelle, all edges gilt. Some scuffing to volume III near edge of bands and head of spine; tiny wear spot to head of spine. All the steel-engraved plates are bright and clean, no foxing on a set that is usually found otherwise. With the exception of the scuffing, a superior set, fine and clean, and in the Publisher's deluxe bindings. The first two volumes (in one) contain Westmorland and Cumberland. The third volume contains Durham and Northumberland. Collectively, the three titles together (each with separate pagination and their own title pages) are termed British Switzerland. Indeed, the highly detailed steel-engravings are like those of numerous other "Picturesque Scenery" titles published during this period. Some earlier editions of these three volumes were issued with two steel-engraving per page, and issued with varying numbers of plates. Our volumes contain the full complement of plates and presents each steel-engraving separately rather than two to a page. Another issue that occurs with this title is that the plates are most often found foxed and/or badly spotted. Our set is complete, with clean engravings, and it is presented in the Publisher's deluxe morocco binding. Enuf said.
