Cimabue compte parmi les peintres les plus importants de la deuxième moitié du XIIIe siècle. Il fut l'un des premiers à ouvrir la voie du naturalisme dans la peinture occidentale. Comme l'ont mis en évidence les travaux incontournables de Luciano Bellosi et de Miklós Boskovits, Cimabue fut l'un des premiers peintres à chercher à représenter le monde, les objets et les corps tels qu'ils existent. Avec lui, les conventions de représentation héritées de l'art oriental, si prisées jusqu'alors, cèdent la place à une peinture inventive, cherchant à suggérer un espace tridimensionnel, des corps en volumes et modelés par de subtils dégradés, des membres articulés, des gestes naturels et des émotions humaines. Ce renouvellement de la définition même de la peinture s'est conjugué à un certain nombre d'inventions techniques révélées par plusieurs restaurations récentes, telles celles de la Maestà de Santa Maria dei Servi à Bologne, de la Madone Gualino (parfois attribuée à Duccio) de la galerie Sabauda de Turin ou celle la Maestà d'Assise, qui toutes ont permis de renouveler nos connaissances de la technique de l'artiste.
