There is a sticker on the verso of the front free end paper signed by both authors and documenting this copy as number 115 of a limited edition of 3000. On the opposite page is the signature of the President of New Bedford Five Cents Savings Bank, which is responsible for this edition. 204pp., profusely illustrated, with a bibliography, and complete index. Fine. - A one-and-a-half page letter consisting of Over 80 words typed on two faces of 5-7/8 inch high by 4-7/8 inch wide "Office of the Commissioner of Public Works" stationery with an integral attached leaf. Then Commissioner of Public Works, Thomas Francis Gilroy writes to New York Lieutenant Governor William F. Sheehan to recommend that Sheehan appoint Mr. M.P. Wall to the board which has "control of the New York State Exhibit, at the World's Fair in Chicago". Signed "Thos Fr. Gilroy". There is a minor tear to the top of the fold between the first page and the integral leaf. Else, near fine. The Irish immigrant Thomas Francis Gilroy (1840-1911) moved to New York City at the age of seven. Starting work at 16 in the publishing business, he went on to serve as court clerk, county clerk and Undersheriff for New York County. Active in politics, he served as a messenger for "Boss" Tweed and subsequently as confidential secretary for Tweed's successor Henry W. Genet. Gilroy was appointed Commissioner of Public Works after managing Hugh J. Grant's successful mayoral campaign and became the titular head of the Tammany Hall organization, though not its real leader. He succeeded Hugh J. Grant as mayor in 1893 but became involved in the ongoing Tammany scandal due to the 1894 Lexow Investigation into widespread corruption in the police department which was tied in to the Tammany organization.
