Bindings attenuated, all boards attached, but tenuous. Internally very good. Scattered toning. Illustrated by three hundred and sixty engravings that show the methods of physiognomy. The Swiss philosopher Johann Kaspar Lavater repopularized the pseudoscience of physiognomy. Physiognomy is the assessment of people's character based on their outer appearance, particularly their facial features. While criticized by some contemporary writers, physiognomy was enjoyed widespread popularity in the 18th and 19th centuries. The roots of the genocidal impulses of the 20th century rest in the intellectual of foundations physiognomy. Writer Hannah More wrote to Horace Walpole that "In vain do we boast . that philosophy had broken down all the strongholds of prejudice, ignorance, and superstition; and yet, at this very time . Lavater's physiognomy books sell at fifteen guineas a set." (The Cambridge History of Science: Volume 4, Eighteenth-Century Science, ed. Roy Porter) Refs: Garrison-Morton 154 (1772 unillustrated original edition in German). ESTC T139902.
