    Hardcover. Condizione: Fair. Hardcover. Brown cloth over boards with black and gilt stamping to front cover and spine. Title page dated 1873. 145 pages. In fair condition. Covers have quite a bit of uneven and speckled fading. Lettering on front cover and spine is slightly difficult to read. Cloth has been chipped toward foot of spine, with a little over the size of a dime missing. Chipping at head and foot of spine also chipped, fraying cloth. Boards slightly exposed at corners. Rear gutter is cracked through, but covers remain attached and there are no loose pages. Some chipping along fore edge at front of text block. Previous owner's inscription on front free endpaper. Some foxing throughout. Illustrations throughout. Overall, a fair copy in good reading condition.

The edges are a touch discoloured and gribby; the corners lightly bumped, the joints and spine ends bumped. There are one or two stains and marks to the boards and the gilding is a touch worn. All edges gilt. Prize bookplate to the front pastedown. Front hinge strained, else binding generally tight. Leaves have the odd mark or instance of spotting. 32pp publisher's advertisements bound to rear; illustrated with Tenniel's vignette drawings throughout. A lovely new edition, bound in the publisher's arsenic binding.

Four volumes of Rev. Thomas James edition of the fables of Aesop, which were first published in this edition in 1848.Each of these volumes is the edition of James, and features illustrations from John Tenniel and Wolf.Illustrated with over one-hundred vignette illustrations from Tenniel in each volume. Lewis Carroll was so impressed by John Tenniel's animated designs for this edition of the fables that he chose the Tenniel to illustrate 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'.Present here are: the 1852 edition of this work; the 1863 edition, being the forty-eighth thousand; the 1868 edition, being the sixty-third thousand, and the 1882 edition, being the seventy-eighth thousand.Aesop's Fables are a collection of brief moral tales attributed to a storyteller believed to have lived in ancient Greece around the 6th century BCE. Hinges of 1868 volume strained, but firmly held. Clamshell fine. Internally, 1852 volume strained throughout, with remaining volumes lightly strained. Pages a touch age toned, with instances of light spotting throughout. Good. book.
