The first English translation of The Odes of Anacreon, a collection from the Ancient Greek lyric poet, translated by Thomas Moore and with ink illustrations from eminent French artist Girodet de Roussey. In half vellum, with renewed blue end papers, and the original half-title preserved. Contains a frontispiece and all fifty-three other full-page ink illustrations by De Roussey. Contains a publisher's original advertisement leaf to the rear. Celebrating the beautiful illustrations of De Roussey as much as the lyrics of Anacreon, this lovely translation was inspired by the French artist's depiction of Anacreon's odes, particularly the Hellenic settings of the luxurious flowers and soft skies. With many of Anacreon's poems related to Cupid and romance, De Roussey's speciality for romanticism and eroticism are showcased. In half vellum, with renewed blue end papers, and the original half-title preserved. Externally, mostly smart, with faint marks to boards, and minor browning to vellum. Small knocks to the extremities. Blue end papers are bright and clean. A small crease and minor closed tear to top corner of first blank, with a couple of small spots to blanks.
