Was wurde in der romischen Kaiserzeit, besonders aber in der Spatantike und im fruhen Byzanz uber bildende Kunst gedacht und geschrieben? Zum einen fallt auf, dass die zeitgenossischen Kunstler, deren Werk… man oft bewundert, meistens ungenannt bleiben. Die Namen, denen man immer wieder begegnet, sind die der alten Griechen: Phidias, Praxiteles, Apelles und andere. Aber was man uber sie weiss, ist zunehmend ungenau und irrelevant. Die Masse des olympischen Zeus werden laufend erhoht, das Monumentale wird betont, auch, dass die Statue aus Gold und Elfenbein hergestellt wurde; doch mehr wird kaum gesagt, was schon deshalb nicht uberrascht, da die Meisten, die daruber schrieben, das Original wohl nie gesehen haben. Hellenistische Anekdoten werden wiederholt, nach asthetischen Bewertungen sucht man vergeblich. Ein 'gottlicher Mann' war selbst Phidias auch nicht, schliesslich war er nur ein Handwerker. Schwierig haben es dabei die fruhchristlichen Autoren: sie konnen sich der in den Rhetorenschulen gelernten Bewunderung fur die grossen Griechen oft nicht entledigen, doch die haben heidnische Gotzenbilder, Idole geschaffen, oft von Damonen inspiriert und nicht selten wundertatig. In dieser Weise wurden oft recht kuriose Ansichten geaussert, doch wenn man sich mit dem Ubergang von der Antike zum Mittelalter beschaftigt, sollte man auch diesen Aspekt der Mentalitatsgeschichte nicht ganz vernachlassigen.
