Reginald Jacques was also conductor of the Oxford Orchestra Society from 1930 to 1936. From 1931 to 1960 he was conductor of The Bach Choir in London. In 1936 he founded his own Jacques Orchestra, which he conducted until 1960. In 1954 he was made Commander of the Order of the British Empire. He died in 1969. John Rutter was born in London in 1945 and studied music at Clare College, Cambridge. His compositions embrace choral, orchestral, and instrumental music, and he has edited or co-edited various choral anthologies, including four Carols for Choirs volumes with Sir David Willcocks and the Oxford Choral Classics series. From 1975 to 1979 he was Director of Music at Clare College, and in 1981 he formed his own choir, the Cambridge Singers. He now divides his time between composition and conducting and is sought after as a guest conductor for the world's leading choirs and orchestras. Born in 1919, David Willcocks began his musical career as a chorister at Westminster Abbey, later winning scholarships to Clifton College and King's College, Cambridge. Following war service, he was elected Fellow of King's College, and later became Organist of Salisbury & Worcester Cathedrals, conducting the Three Choirs Festival whilst at Worcester. Willcocks returned to King's College, Cambridge as Director of Music from 1957-1974, with the first collection of his arrangements in the Carols for Choirs series publishing in 1961. He was Director of Music at the Royal College of Music from 1974-1984, died 2015 ; FINE. Book.

Any working art critic inevitably acquires an extensive knowledge of this genre of printed ephemera. Heralding gallery and museum shows, invitations flood the mailbox, crowd the desk and all too often accumulate so intractably on the kitchen counter as to seem part of the decor. You can't live with them, and until the show is over, you can't throw them out. Still, life without such art-world byproducts would be a lot more difficult. Not only do they convey the important facts -- the who, when and where -- of shows that need to be seen. They're also advertisements bent on seducing us into attendance by being clever, eye-catching or provocative -- although sometimes they nip interest in the bud. (There's probably no art lover with mailing-list credentials who hasn't held up some gallery announcement and said, "Forget it!") Invitations are style statements in a minor key, ancillary artworks of a collective sort. Designed by artists, by graphic designers, by art dealers and museum curators -- usually a combination of the above -- they are the advance guard for the real thing. The five signatories are: Sir Alfred Claud Hollis (1874-1962), Governor of Trinidad and Tobago, 1930-1936, and author of a historical account of Spanish Trinidad; his wife Enid Mabel Hollis (née Longman), Lady Hollis (1888-1939); Sir Edward Brandis Denham (1876-1938), Governor of British Guiana, 19301935, and Jamaica, 19351938;…Sir Thomas Reginald St Johnston (1881-1950), Governor of the Leeward Islands, 1929-1936; Sir William Charles Fleming Robertson (1867-1937), Governor of Barbados, 1925-1932. On one side of a 13.5 x 16.5 cm leaf of cream paper torn from an autograph album. In good condition, lightly aged. Three of the governors have signed in a column towards the centre of the page: 'Claud Hollis | Governor, Trinidad | 17.1.32 | Edward . Denham . | Govr. British Guiana. | 26.1.32. | Reginald St. Johnston. | Govr. Leeward Islands.' Hollis's wife has signed to the right of her husband's signature, in the top right-hand corner: 'Enid Hollis', and beneath her signature, in an extremely close hand is the signature of 'W. C. F Robertson. | Govenor Barbados | 31.1.32'.

Mid-eighteenth century bound collection of 'Graveyard' poems including elegies and meditations such as the earliest publication by John Scott of Amwell (the first notable Quaker poet) and works by Thomas Gray, Edward Young, John Delap and Reginald Heber. Small quarto bound in eighteenth century speckled calf, the boards decorate…d with a border of coronets, cracking along outer hinges, reinforced within. Two faded spine labels: 'Select Poems Vol I'. Marbled edges to text block. All eleven imprints are complete with the exception of a couple of half-title which are noted below. One of the imprints, Keate's Epistle from Jane Gray, has been sent through the post and still bears an address on the verso of the title page and traces of the wax seal. Eleven imprints: J Langhorne, The Visions of Fancy, 1752, H Payne, pp24 (no half-title); ownership stamp of 'Emile Racaud, La Rochelle', ESTC locates 9 copies William Whitehead Elegies with an Ode to the Tiber, 2nd Ed, 1757, Dodsley, pp24, half-title present; 'Boitard sculp' vignette to title page. John Delap, Elegies, 1760, Dodsley, pp12: ESTC locates 10 copies. Delap wrote these Elegies in imitation of Gray's Elegy, subsequently making his name by writing for David Garrick. The Elegies are Scott's first separate publication and inspired by Gray they record the passing of the seasons rather than an individual. Second Edition, 1763, Robert Horsfield [4] pp22 [George Keate] An Epistle from Lady Jane Gray to Lord Guilford Dudley, 1762, Dodsley, [4] pp20: this has been folded and sent through the post early in its life with an eighteenth century address written on the verso of the title page 'For Mr George Laidler at Newcastle on T[yne]' and a hole to title page where wax seal has been opened. The poem is dedicated to Mary Lepel. [Edward Young] Resignation in Two Parts and a Postscript to Mrs B[oscawen], 1762, William Owen, pp64, advertisement leaf follows title page with 'Erratum' leaf pasted to verso of this leaf, A2.
