Hardcover. Condizione: Fair. EARLY EDITION. 8vo. xii,280pp. (6.9 x 4.1 inches). Inscribed by Author to the front free endpaper; " Presented to Miss L. Lions, by her humble servant, the Author". The published date has been carefully removed from the title page. The book was first published in 1831 and this copy is strictly contemporary with that edition but i am guessing that the date was removed so that it could not be easily identified as a reprint. Finely illustrated with Rowlandson's fantastic plates. A very good clean copy with a couple of the gatherigs sprung a little. In the publishers illustrated paper covered boards which are heavily rubbed and worn to the corners. Re-spined with plain dark green cloth. Overall not the best of copies but uncommon with Harrison's inscription..…

Illustrated with 24 fine hand-coloured, full page, aquatint plates, the colouring still strong and bright, by Thomas Rowlandson. The plates are generally on smaller leaves but all are complete with image and printed lettering in the margins. Some minor spots of foxing to a few leaves but generally clean and bright in the scarce original publisher's red/brown cloth binding, with gilt lettering and decoration on spine. Decorative blind stamped panels on boards. Original yellow coated endpapers. Previous owners bookplate to front paste down endpaper and ink name to front free endpaper. Some rubbing to top and tail of spines and fore-edges, and the inner hinges cracked but holding firm. Some loss to the very bottom of the spine but generally a very good example.…

First Edition of this ferocious satire of British colonial rule in India. Royal 8vo (244 x 150mm): iii-x,252pp, with folding frontispiece, illustrated title, and 25 full-page plates (all tissue-guarded hand-colored aquatints) and one sepia engraving. C8 (pp. 31-32) is a cancel ("frequently missing," according to Tooley), with p. 30 text reproduced on p. 32; pp. 73-74 folios repeated but no duplication of text. Wanting the errata slip (as often). Slightly later polished calf, covers framed in gilt, gilt dentelles, spine richly gilt in six compartments divided by raised bands, two red morocco lettering pieces gilt; top edge gilt, others untrimmed, French blue end papers. Tall wide-margined copy, securely bound (perhaps rebacked) and clean throughout with good impressions of the plates. Franklin, pp 68-71. Grolier (Rowlandson) 34. Tooley 412. Abbey (Travel) 437. Hardie, pp. 171, 317. Sometimes ascribed to William Combe, though Hamilton (Doctor Syntax: A Silhouette of William Combe) lists it as an imitation. Political satire directed against Lord Moira, Marquis of Hastings, who at the time was Governor General of Bengal and commander-in-chief of British forces in India; against the East India Company, for its Hindu prejudices, and against the church's patent disregard for Indian culture. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.
