Raamatu esmane eesmärk on sillutada teed Kaplinski sisemaastiku juurde, ent pilk heidetakse ka sellele keerukale kultuurilisele ja poliitilisele ümbrusele, kus Kaplinski sündis ja kasvas. Autor valgustab sel moel Kaplinski käitumise vähem nähtavaid dimensioone ja jälgib mõningaid tema kõige tähtsamaid inimsuhteid, valikuid ja huvisid nii isiklikus kui ka avalikus elus. Thomas Salumets on eesti päritolu kanada kirjandusteadlane, Vancouveri Briti Columbia ülikooli kirjandusprofessor. Ta on olnud Balti Uuringute Edendamise ühingu esimees ja ajakirja Journal of Baltic Studies peatoimetaja. 2015. aasta maikuus valiti Salumets TÜ audoktoriks. Oma teadusuuringutes on Salumets tegelenud Liivimaaga seotud saksa autorite F.M. Klingeri ja J.M.R. Lenzi loominguga, oma õppetöös ja kirjutistes on ta järjepidevalt tutvustanud eesti kirjandust, nt J. Krossi, V. Luige, T. Õnnepalu, U. Masingu, S. Oksaneni jt loomingut. 9789985335925.
