In der Literatur besteht zwar breite Einigkeit darüber, dass Wissensspillovers (entgeltlose Wissenstransfers) zwischen Individuen, Unternehmen oder Regionen auftreten, die geographische Dimension von Wissensspillovers ist jedoch umstritten, insbesondere die Frage, ob diese geographisch lokalisiert sind oder nicht.Thomas Scherngell erfasst die geographische Verbreitung von Wissensspillovers zwischen europäischen Regionen in der High-Tech-Industrie. Anhand einer empirischen Studie beruhend auf High-Tech Patentzitierungen des Europäischen Patentamtes zeigt er, dass die Intensität von Wissensspillovers mit zunehmender geographischer Distanz signifikant abnimmt. Jedoch ist dieser negative Effekt geringer als der von Landesgrenzen. Wissensspillovers rückten in den letzten Jahren aufgrund ihrer großen Bedeutung für ökonomisches Wachstum immer stärker ins Zentrum des Erkenntnisinteresses der Wirtschaftsgeographie. Die Geographie von Wissensspillovers ist jedoch noch weitgehend unerforscht. Durch die Analyse europäischer High-Tech Patentzitierungen wird in dieser Arbeit die Spur, die Wissensspillovers hinterlassen, verfolgt und damit die geographische Dimension dieser zu erfassen versucht.
