Decorative Cloth. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Hardback. First Edition. Alpine Plants of Europe. Foxing to edge and some pages. Ex-libris name sticker to inside cover. Small tear to top edge of spine. Slightly worn and bumped corners. Green cloth with gilt decoration and lettering. This book owes it origin chiefly to the fact that there is no well-illustrated work in the English language descriptive of the Flowering Plants of the whole range of the Alps. The aim has been to give botanical descriptions of the more beautiful and interesting species indigenous to the High Alps and other mountains of Europe, and some which are found chiefly in subalpine districts, together with a few Southern rock-plants, but which should never ben called 'Alpine', as is too often the case. Some 700 species, and a few marked varieties, are here described. The author has had the opportunity of using the beautiful illustrations of Alpine flowers painted from nature by Joseph Seboth, and he has added a couple of small drawings of his own. With 64 coloured Plates (311 Figures). 287 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.). …

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First edition. London and New York: George Routledge and Sons, Limited; E.P. Dutton and Co., 1911. xv, 287 pages, followed by lxiv [64] leaves of numbered plates including frontispiece. Coloured plates, numerous text illustrations, and a folded map at rear. Octavo, 22 cm. A bright and well preserved copy of this classic early twentieth century alpine flora. The sixty four colour plates remain vivid, with excellent registration and no obvious fading. Botanical illustrations are finely executed and highly attractive, making this both a practical field guide and a decorative natural history volume. Includes the bookplate of Isaline Blew Horner, the distinguished Pali scholar and later President of the Pali Text Society. A desirable association copy, linking Edwardian botany with twentieth century Buddhist scholarship. Original cloth binding. Boards clean with light rubbing at extremities. Spine sound and firm, with minor softening at head and tail. Corners gently bumped. Text block clean and tight. Occasional light foxing, mainly to preliminaries and plate margins. Plates generally fresh and bright. Folded map present and intact, with no tears observed. No loose pages. No inscriptions apart from the Horner bookplate. A substantial and visually rich work covering the alpine flora of Europe, with practical cultural hints for cultivation. An attractive copy of an increasingly scarce illustrated botanical title, enhanced by notable provenance.…
