Through that paper, he supported the Confederacy and wrote pieces that promoted white supremacy, suggesting that the confederate flag would "rank among the proudest ensigns of the nations" and be recognized as "The White Man's Flag." This novel is his most famous work, an epistolary fiction. The illustrations reflect nineteenth-century American perceptions of the racial binary (and hierarchy) that Thompson endorsed. An excellent historical document demonstrating the politics of race and white supremacy in the history of American fiction.
