The authors then follow the history of Maori-European relationships (sometimes hostile, often uncertain,) the expansion of European settlement, agriculture and the slow pace of development, particularly communications, owing to its isolation. Today, the East Coast, despite its undoubeted potantial, remains relatively under-developed, the "Challenge" still not entirely fulfilled.
