Highly detailed sheet maps that form a comple…te view of the Indian subcontinent during a period of significant British East India Company expansion. Published in Edinburgh by John Thomson as part of his New General Atlas (c. 1814?1821), the first of the maps covers Northern India from Persia and the Indus Valley in the west to Assam and Bhutan in the east, extending north into Tibet, with two inset maps which feature a remarkably detailed map of the Kingdom of Nepal, (which was rarely visited by Westerners at that time), and a second inset of Cabul (Kabul) in the upper left. The Southern map covers the peninsula from Bombay in the north down to the northern part of Ceylon (Sri Lanka). A beautiful pair of maps with attractive hand-colouring defining eight spheres of influence identified in the key in the lower left of the Southern map, for example red for British-controlled areas, orange for the Nabob of Oude, green for the Berar Rajah.
