The firm J. Lauritzen was founded in 1884 by Ditlev Lauritzen as a small trading firm selling building materials and later agricultural articles and coal. From 1888 the main focus was on shipowning, but the original connection with the commercial field was partly maintained, and new industrial fields were gradually added to the activities of the business. Tietgen merged the three biggest Danish steamship companies of that day.
