Hardcover. Unique. Unique. Hardcover. "Bound by Don Glaister with sanded and painted aluminum panels edged in goatskin, Cosmos, an edition of one, features five haunting original mixed-media images by artist and author Jacqueline Thurston that blur the boundary between drawing and painting. A fine artist and photographer, Thurston is twice the recipient of National Endowment for the Arts fellowships and is a former Fulbright Scholar to Egypt. Each of her subtle and mysterious paintings, which Glaister describes as "ephemeral as smoke," is accompanied by her written reflection exploring a fascinating aspect of the cosmos. Drawing upon her lyrical and poetic voice, the written reflections explore cosmic phenomena. The text was read by an astrophysicist to ensure its accuracy. Suzanne Moore's elegant formal design and layout features seven individually bound and numbered signatures, each of which is introduced by her subtly painted pages. Moore's painted pages on paper handmade by Katy McGregor evoke clouds of nebulae in outer space. Each signature is bound on the leading edge with silk thread. Close examination of Glaister's shimmering painted aluminum panels reveals a subtle grid that references the scientific phenomena described in Thurston's written reflections and their intriguing captions, such as "Birth of the Cosmos: The Einstein Cross." Substantial in scale, page spreads measure eighteen inches by forty eight inches, as is fitting for a book celebrating the universe. COSMOS was printed on Somerset Book by Sandy Tillock. The typeface, Avenir, was selected by Jessica Spring of Springtide Press." [Artist Statement] Jacqueline Thurston is an artist, writer, and Professor Emerita at San Jose State University. She is twice the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and was a Fulbright Scholar to Egypt. Thurston's photographs are in major national and international museum collections, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Library of Congress; the International Museum of Photography; the Carnegie Museum of Art; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Cantor Museum; the University of New Mexico Museum of Art; the Center for Photography at Arizona University; the Bibliotheque Nationale, France; and the Bibliotheque Alexandria, Egypt. Tight, bright, and unmarred. Full leather binding, printed aluminum onlay, images and text held in individual signatures. Large fo. np. Illus. (color plates). Signed by the artist. Full Leather. Condizione: Fine binding. First Edition. Folio. [12] leaves of varying lengths, some folding. Three Cibachrome prints. Limited edition, number 6 of 6 copies signed by Thurston at the colophon. As issued, in a designed binding by Donald Glaister of full ochre goatskin with rosewood veneer "hands" recessed into the front cover. Sanded and painted copper, brass and aluminum onlays represent bracelets at the base of the rosewood hands, and are dimensional, rising off of the binding and floating in space. The rear cover has recessed and raised areas that offer a shadow of the veneer hands on the front cover. Incised panels, painted at the base of the incision in reds and oranges run along the bottom portion of both boards, behind the design. Doublures and flyleaves of painted cork; handwoven silk headbands. The binding is stamp-signed and dated 2018 with Glaister's device on the rear hinge. Housed in a felt-lined clamshell box with printed paper title label. While Thurston's mounted, still-life Cibachrome prints are the centerpieces of the three sections, her beautiful writing gives this book form. Thurston's complex reflections find a throughline from the earliest known expressions of art in the European caves, to her children reconciling with loss through art, and finally to the expression of love in a handmade quilt stitched two generations earlier; all bookended with two poems by Dickinson. Like all great essays, Thurston pulls together what might seem disparate items, ideas, events, and memories, bringing them into a single clear focus and allows us to learn something about ourselves. We recognize what it is to be a human and to tangle with the mysterious elements that define our existence: ritual, belief, loss, fear, connection, love. A remarkable book in which, fittingly, Thurston takes our hand in hers and walks us through the most potent aspects of our humanity. It is not often that writing, images, and design come together so harmoniously. Jacqueline Thurston is an artist, writer, and Professor Emerita at San Jose State University. Sculptural Box. Condizione: Fine. Unique. Unique. Sculptural Box. "Song of the Sea, an edition of one by Jacqueline Thurston, artist and author, celebrates the embodiment of a feminine spirit as a force of nature. A cherry chest with ebony inlays opens to reveal a prose poem paired with a Cibachrome photograph printed by the artist. Cibachrome photographs are prized for their luminous and jewel-like quality. (The paper and chemistry once produced by Ilfochrome in Switzerland are no longer available.) Song of the Sea is an innovative approach to the traditional marriage of word and image. The elegant wood chest with its silver element framing the photograph reminds us that words and images are truly treasures. Rich in imagery, the poem floats in the inside of the lid. Enriched by a subtle color change, the verse is an ode to the sea and the phenomenon of a double blue moon. The cherry chest was fabricated by Chris Daubert. The concept was developed by Walter Sparks. The poem was typeset by McKenzie & Harris and letterpress-printed by Okeanos Press on handmade paper fabricated by Magnolia Editions Song of the Sea is one of five individual "songs," the culmination of nearly a decade-long pursuit." [Artist statement] Other works in this series have all been placed in institutions: Song of the Bear and Song of the Shaman are in the collections of College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University [shared], and Song of the Fire is in the Bancroft Library collection. Included is a catalogue created when the work was shown at Villa Montalvo and reviews of the exhibition, Cycle of Songs, together with a written reflection on the artist's personal connection to libraries. Thurston's first artist book, Shadowland, which also paired her writing with her Cibachrome photograph prints, was purchased by Mark Dimunation for the Library of Congress. Tight, bright, and unmarred. Custom formed hinged wooden box with silver framing, handmade paper with poem mounted in lid, photo mounted in the base. np. Illus. (color plate). Signed by the artist.…
