One of only five actors to receive an Academy nomination for Best Actor for his first screen appearance for "The Rogue Song" 1930. When he made his Metropolitan Opera in 1923 in "Boris Godounoff", his name on the program was spelled "Tibbett" instead of his real name "Tibbet." The Tibbett spelling was used from that point on. A baritone wit…h large, deep, and dark-timbred voice. His dynamic range (in his prime) ranged from forceful fortes to delicate pianissimos, he sang leading roles with the Metropolitan Opera in New York City more than 600 times from 1923 to 1950. He performed diverse musical theatre roles, including Captain Hook in Peter Pan in a touring show.
