Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Fine. 27x19cm, 63pp. With monochrome photographic reproductions of bindings. Bound in full pale blue cloth over boards with blue marbled paper pastedowns, paper printed title-label to the backstrip. McMasters Miller Hunt was a collector of botanical books who also became a bookbinder. She studied with a pupil of T J Cobden-Sanderson, of whom Marianne Tidcombe (whose name is rather shockingly misspelt on the title page) is the foremost scholar. The binding is a variant to that usually found, and this copy may thus be comprised of a set of 'sheets for binding' although no such details are given. Fine.

Hardcover. Condizione: New. Condizione sovraccoperta: New DJ (still in shrinkwrap). First Edition (so stated). New Castle, Delaware / London: Oak Knoll Press / The British Library, 2000. Brand New in a Brand New dust jacket. Perfect condition. STILL SEALED in the publisher's clear plastic SHRINKWRAP. NO rubbing. NO fading. Bright, shiny, clean, square and tight. Sharp corners. NO owner's name or bookplate. NOT a remainder. NOT a library discard. Fresh and crisp -- obviously never read. 2000. First Edition (so stated, but actually an updated and expanded edition). Foreword by Dr. Marianne Tidcombe. After his apprenticeship at the British Museum Bindery (1940-1948), the author managed the famed Zaehnsdorff's bindery before opening his own bookbinding establishment. Bibliography. Beautifully illustrated with many full color binding photos. Bound in the original gilt-stamped brown cloth. From the dust jacket: "This is the autobiography of one of the world's leading book restorers, binding scholars, and international lecturers on book conservation and binding. It is also the very warm story of a gangly teenager's rise from his first position at the British Library's bindery to the pinnacle of his craft. This important work is not only this gifted craftsman's personal story - in RECOLLECTIONS the reader is treated to a unique insight into Britain's strict trade school; and indentured apprenticeship of the early first half of the 20th century. Originally published as a fine press book by Henry Morris on his renowned Bird & Bull Press, this edition has an expanded text with many additional historical illustrations. This edition also features forty-six colour and forty-six black and white photographs of Bernard Middleton's finest binding designs." 7.25" wide by 10.25" tall. First Edition (so stated). Hardcover. New/New DJ (still in shrinkwrap). xii, 126pp. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping.

Aggiungi al carrelloPrinted wrappers, paper cover label, 8vo, 98 pp, ills (many colour). 75 + 85 items. The very appealing and well-illustrated catalogue of an exhibition held at Henry Sotheran Ltd., London, 30 December 1994 - 28 January 1995 ; The Ruskin Gallery, Sheffield, 17 February - 18 March 1995 ; and George Bayntun, Bath, 3 - 29 April 1995. In 1894 James and Mary Lee Tregaskis organised an International Bookbinding Exhibition consisting of 73 copies of the little Kelmscott Press book, The Tale of King Florus and the Fair Jehane, by different binders from twenty-seven countries around the world, held at their London bookshop, the Caxton Head. That catalogue is reproduced in facsimile here, on pp.11-30, followed by colour photographs of each of the bindings. It was one of the most popular bookbinding exhibitions ever, with press reports in over seventy publications, and when it was shown again in 1994 it attracted a great deal of attention. To mark the centenary a new exhibition was prepared for which 85 copies of Andrew Marvell's The Garden and Other Poems were bound by binders from all over the world and exhibited in London, Sheffield, and Bath - again the catalogue is reproduced with colour photographs of all the bindings. Contents: The Tregaskis International Bookbinding Exhibition 1894, an Introductory Essay by Marianne Tidcombe; a Facsimile of the 1894 Exhibition Catalogue; Photographs of the Bindings; A century of Fine Bookbinding, by Bernard C. Middleton; The Tregaskis Centenary Exhibition 1994, An Introductory Essay byMarianne Tidcombe; The Catalogue and Photographs of Bindings. Minor mark to rear wrapper, otherwise Very Good.

Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: New. 1st Edition. 8vo, pp. 79, [1]; with photographic illustrations; printed purple wrappers. The imprisonment of Annie Cobden-Sanderson, daughter of the famous Victorian statesman Richard Cobden, prompted a wave of letters of protest to the newspapers, giving the women's suffrage campaign the major boost she had hoped for. The ten women with whom Cobden-Sanderson was arrested (and of whom the Home Office deemed her to be the leader) were the first group of middle-class women sentenced to prison for demanding the right to vote. The remarkable survival of the diary she wrote in Holloway Prison in 1906, the earliest known prison diary of a suffragist/suffragette, allows us to read her fascinating story without embellishment. Dr Marianne Tidcombe provides a full transcription of the diary, with extensive notes on the characters and events mentioned. Her biographical introduction gives a full description of Cobden-Sanderson's life, from her childhood in an intensely political household to her later career as a campaigner for equal rights, the welfare of children, and peace among nations. Marianne Tidcombe became a friend of Annie Cobden-Sanderson's daughter Stella (1886 1979) and her great-niece Elizabeth Cobden Boyd while writing on the life and work of Stella's father, T. J. Cobden-Sanderson. Her books, The Bookbindings of T. J. Cobden-Sanderson (1984), The Doves Bindery (1991), Women Bookbinders 1880-1920 (1996), and The Doves Press (2001) were published by the British Library. Published by the Libanus Press in a limited edition of 500 numbered copies. Language: English.
