Half Calf. Condizione: Very Good. 8vo. 240, 88 pp. With frontis portrait and 27 copper engraved plates, which are generally whimsical, boisterous, or funny. The plates capture the tone of much of the text, which is given over to light verse and broad burlessque, dialect humor. Of greatest value, though, is surely the glossary of… Lancashire words and phrases, combined with how this picturesque form of speech is worked into the skits and dialogues. Tim Bobbins was a pseudonym for John Collier (1708-1786), the Lancashire Hogarth. His publication on the Lancashire dialect was indeed the first important work to treat the subject. Heavy age toning. Some soiling besides. Offsetting to plates. Spine calf a bit dry. Binding remains tight, and copy is overall still attractive, even with faults.
