The translator's preface is initialled "W.M.T." - William M. Thomson, who also translated other works by the author published by Temple. The translation is apparently of dubious quality but this small volume in the "After Dinner Series" is uncommon, certainly so institutionally with only a small handful traced in libraries around the world.…

Near Fine with light foxing and neat, sporadic pencil notations to contents throughout, with faint damp staining to margins of volume III. The scarce first appearance in book form of Tolstoy's long novel masterwork, a turbulent romance set in the backdrop of Tsar Alexander II politically and socially reformed Russia. Initially serialized in the Russian periodical Ruskii Vestnik from 1873 to 1877 and praised by Tolstoy's contemporary Fyodor Dostoevsky as "sheer perfection as a work of art.
