The work documents toolcutters and manufacturers across the British Isles (including London, Edinburgh, and Dublin), continental Europe (notably Paris, Hamburg, and Vienna), and North America and Australia (including Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, New York, Philadelphia, Melbourne, and Sydney). It traces both prominent workshops and lesser-known provincial makers, situating them within broader developments in industrial production and the bookbinding trade. Supplementary material includes appendices on tool shapes and typologies, smoke proofs, major public and private collections, lineage charts of toolmaking firms, and a list of known pre-1845 toolmakers. The volume is further supported by three separate indices, enhancing its utility as a reference tool. Foreword by Marianne Tidcombe. A detailed and scholarly study of a previously under-documented aspect of the history of book production and decorative bookbinding.
