Zodra het grootste deel van de Vlaamse kust in Duitse handen was gevallen, begon men in 1914 met de bouw van reusachtige versterkingen, kanonstellingen, bunkers, loopgraven en mitrailleursnesten. Het indrukwekkende werk had slechts één bedoeling: 's werelds grootste duikbootbasis bouwen én beschermen. Vanuit Zeebrugge en Oostende, met Brugge als hoofdbasis, voeren vier jaar lang U-boten uit om de geallieerden aan te vallen. Tegen het einde van de Eerste Wereldoorlog was de 'U-Flottille Flandern' erin geslaagd om maar liefst 2.554 geallieerde schepen te kelderen! De geallieerden zetten daarom de grote middelen in om de onderzeeërs een halt toe te roepen: mijnen, patrouilleschepen, vliegtuigen, spionnen. De bittere strijd op zee kostte het leven aan bijna 1.200 man, bovendien gingen meer dan 70 U-boten voorgoed verloren. Onderwaterarcheoloog Tomas Termote dook naar de wrakken van de vele onderzeeërs en legt hun geheimen bloot. Hij schrijft over het leven aan boord van de U-boten, hun belang in de oorlog en de zware verliezen aan beide kanten. Voor het eerst wordt ingezoomd op dit boeiende stuk oorlogsgeschiedenis.
