About the book >.>.> To describe the work of Hayley Tompkins is not easy. It sits in the space between painting and sculpture, between looking and experiencing. Her installations are constellations of works produced using her unique visual language. Despite including very little actual paint within her exhibition for Bonner Kunstverein, Tompkins' practice belongs within the medium of painting. She employs it as a process of exploration; as a means to understand and connect with the world around her, challenging its transformational possibilities, and the viewers' perception of what a painting is, or could be. In Sonner III (2018) paint only appears on the work's edges in the form of a bright orange stripe down one side. Her other 'marks' or gestures manifest themselves in the placement of material. Here she has covered the large wooden frame with a shimmering gauze-like fab-ric, then roughly cut a large hole in the middle, forcing the content to the periphery. The work is placed on the floor, and tightly rolled magazine pages have been.
