Condizione: Good. in-4 (148 x 210 mm), ff. 56 di cui uno con epigrafe e l'ultimo bianco, legatura originale in cartone alla rustica, titolo manoscritto al dorso. Prima edizione di questa nota opera sulla storia di Verona, dalle origini al Cinquecento.  Buon esemplare, con ex libris manoscritto al frontespizio "Octavis Ferraris", successivo ex-libris dei Marchesi Dionisi, alcune chiose ai margini. Due diverse mani dell'epoca hanno fittamente manoscritto le sei pagine che comprendono il verso bianco di O3, recto e verso di O4, il foglio di risguardo ed il contropiatto con notizie genealogiche sulla famiglia degli Scaligeri nel XIII e XIV secolo. Una macchia bruna interesse tre carte al fine del volume.Octavio Ferraris, assai stimato dal Cardinale Federico Borromeo, fu da questi nominato insegnante di retorica al seminario di Milano. Passò quindi nel 1634 all'università di Padova e dal 1646 al 1663 fu anche direttore della Biblioteca di quella Università. Al contropiatto anteriore successivo ex-libris inciso - con stemma marchionale della panoplia con lo scudo con al centro una stella - della famiglia Dionisi, tra le più antiche della nobiltà di Verona: il marchese Gabriele (1719-1808) fu l'artefice della ristrutturazione della villa a Ca' del lago di Cerea nonché del riordino e aggiornamento della biblioteca. La famiglia Dionisi aveva destinato al piano nobile la funzione di libreria e sala di lettura, precoce esempio di centro culturale dove si riunivano artisti e letterati. In-folio (mm 320x217), Carte 66 (mal numerate, con salti di numerazione) + carte [4] col bel Ritratto dell'Autore e 29 tavole, disegnate e incise in legno da Giovanni Caroto (doppie ed anche più volte ripiegate), 2 marche tipografiche (al frontespizio e in fine); fitte note di mano coeva sui margini delle carte 3-5. Legatura in mezza pergamena coeva. Osservazioni e note di mano ottocentesca sul foglio di guardia anteriore. Restauro marginale alla tavola ripiegata dell'anfiteatro ed altri minimi restauri marginali. Ottimo esemplare. Prima edizione molto rara e ricercata. Rappresenta le antichità romane di Verona, disegnate ed incise dal celebre Giovanni Caroto, pittore veronese e pupillo del Mantegna. Di notevole rilievo, il superbo ritratto dell'autore, la grande pianta di Verona e la grande veduta del "Teatro Romano" (che manca più volte negli esemplari, ma che qui è presente in ottima morsura). Stante l'errata e confusa numerazione delle carte, sembra mancare il duerno "F" (carte 17-19), tuttavia, come cita il Mortimer: "La carta F ("Amphitheatrum.") è una tavola a doppia pagina, non segnata (.) e non numerata. Hardcover. Condizione: Fair. 108 pages + colophon + 1 blank page at the rear. 13 signatures. Only the recto pages are numbered, 1-54. Bound in vellum with handwritten label on the spine. The binding is probably nineteeth century utilitarian and plain. When the book was rebound, each folded sheet in each signature was repaired at the fold with a new paper strong enough to hold the new stitching. The adhesive that was used has dried in such as way as to wrinkle the pages. This 'repair' paper at the gutters never touches the text, although it comes awfully close in several places. In addition to causing a wrinkle to the original pages, the adhesive has faded to a tan brown, while the rest of the original pages are still white. Top margin trimmed close to the text and headers. Woodcut decoration on the title page. Two large initials at section breaks. 8 handwritten lines on the back of the title page in much-faded black ink (probably 19th century). Several dates written in the margins in a different hand (ink faded to brown) elsewhere in the book; occassionally a word or two accompanies the date. The history of Verona (modern day Italy) under the rule of the della Scala family in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. This is the first edition of this history, which was reprinted later in the sixteenth century, again in the seventeenth (1 find a single record of a 1649 edition online) and again (for scholarly purposes) in the twentieth. Legatura moderna con pergamena antica, titolo su tassello al dorso. Torello Sarayna fu uno dei pi? celebri storici locali, autore nel 1542 di questa opera, di cui questa Ë la ristampa. La seconda opera fu stampata in latino nel 1540 per la prima volta. Lacking two text leaves as noted above; one leaf with old underlining to text; some wear at the folds and rubbing to the binding; but clean and a most impressive publication which appears to vary in collation from copy to copy. The first printed book on the history and antiquities of Verona, complicated bibliographically since the larger illustrations are printed on multiple woodblocks with extensions, some of which are plates for the purpose of collation and some not. The present copy lacks two leaves of text (M 3-4; ff 39 and 40).

Prima edizione di questa celeberrima opera dedicata alla storia di VeroSenza titolo-1na scritta dal celebre giureconsulto, notaio e storico veronese Sarayna (anche Saraina) Torello, considerata una delle prime e più autorevoli fonti per la storia locale veronese dalle origini al cinquecento. L'opera ripercorre le origini della città di Verona ed il suo sviluppo sotto il dominio scaligero nel trecento e quattrocento. L'ultimo capitolo contiene l'interessante "Brieve descrittione de' come se ritrova il Paese di Verona" e il "Tenore del compromesso fatto sopra la pace già fatta da Ezzelino da Romano Podestà di Verona. e Rizzardo de S. bonifacio." Un raro trattato cinquecentesco sulle antichità al di fuori di Roma, pubblicato nello stesso anno del trattato del Serlio.Nel De origine, sotto il grande ritratto al verso del frontespizio,è un'iscizione indirizzata al lettore in cui si dice che un tale Sebastiano Serlio, "quidam Sergius", nella sua opera aveva riprodotto in maniera non corretta, perché non li aveva visti, alcuni monumenti veronesi. Il volto dell'uomo di profilo potrebbe aecondo alcuni essere di Serlio stesso.
