Paul Sabatier (1858-1928) was a French Protestant theologian and historian whose pioneering studies of Saint Francis helped inaugurate modern Franciscan scholarship. The plates are by Evans's friend Edward Burne-Jones and are stylistically similar to the Grail Quest tapestries Burne-Jones designed for Stanmore Hall, his last major decorating commission before his death in 1898. Evans (1830-1909) was a neo-Jacobite political activist, artist, poet, and translator of medieval French, Latin, Greek, and Italian. He published, separately but in the same year, his study of this text, In Quest of the Holy Graal, an Introduction to the Study of the Legend (Dent, 1898). "As a poet he combined a taste for medievalism with humour", both of which he shared with Burne-Jones. 2 vols, octavo.
