Vellum. Condizione: Very Good Indeed. The first English edition of "The Mirror of Perfection," signed and dated at Assisi by its editor Paul Sabatier, in a striking contemporary hand-painted vellum binding. The first English edition, translated by Sebastian Evans from the Latin text edited and first published by Paul Sabatier in the same year. With the editor's, Paul Sabatier"s, autograph to the front free endpaper, dated "Assisi, 18 mai 1903". Illustrated with a monochrome frontispiece. Collated, complete. First edition, deluxe issue, number 175 of 200 copies for England from a run of 250. The plates are by Evans's friend Edward Burne-Jones and are stylistically similar to the Grail Quest tapestries Burne-Jones designed for Stanmore Hall, his last major decorating commission before his death in 1898. Evans (1830-1909) was a neo-Jacobite political activist, artist, poet, and translator of medieval French, Latin, Greek, and Italian. He published, separately but in the same year, his study of this text, In Quest of the Holy Graal, an Introduction to the Study of the Legend (Dent, 1898). "As a poet he combined a taste for medievalism with humour", both of which he shared with Burne-Jones. 2 vols, octavo. Illustrated title page and frontispiece by Edward Burne-Jones in two states to each vol., with tissue guards. Title pages printed in red and black with decorated border. Publisher's deluxe half vellum, spines lettered in gilt, blue paper-covered sides, top edges gilt, others untrimmed, red silk bookmarkers. Spines toned, short closed tear at head of vol. II, light browning to boards, offsetting to outer leaves, damp stain at foot of gutter of frontispieces of vol. I, else contents notably clean and fresh, bookmarkers detached but retained; a very good copy.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The high history of the holy graal unfolds as a richly layered tale set in a legendary age, centered around the spiritual and moral pursuit of the Holy Grail. This sacred object, said to contain the blood of Christ, serves as a symbol of divine grace and the ultimate goal for a group of noble knights bound by chivalric ideals. The story begins by recounting the Grail's origin and its divine purpose, safeguarded by a select lineage of pure-hearted guardians. Amidst a time of decay and diminished honor, a royal court once known for its valor is shaken by a prophetic vision that reignites the call for virtue. This vision sets the monarch on a quest that mirrors the journey of the soul through trials, revelations, and tests of faith. Accompanied by a devoted companion, the path ahead is shaped by mystical signs and moral choices, reflecting the larger conflict between spiritual corruption and redemption. Through allegorical adventures and moral awakenings, the narrative reaffirms ideals of righteousness, sacrifice, and divine reward in a world teetering between darkness and light.
