Paperback. Condizione: Near Fine. First Edition, 1st Printing. Text/BRAND NEW & Bright. Softcover/VG; strong w/nips, chips to leading back & upper back spine corner, and light surface discoloration as well as to front/rear covers verso Story of a revolt of garlic farmers against corrupt officials, adept at embezzling fees & taxes, slam down official warehouse doors to crops. Novel was banned in China following the June 4th, 1989 Tiananmen Square Uprising. An intricate account of human trials, satirically set in Paradise County long beset by deep poverty, from 2012 Nobel winner Guan Moye (1955 -), best known by his pen name Mo Yan. Of interest, Mo Yan, popularly translated as "don't speak", is also an ironic play on homophones of his given name, and, as author states, in honor of parental constant reminder that "loose lips" invites trouble in troubled times. 290 pgs. A tale of unenviable rural life in China's eastern seaboard of Shantung Province, Mo Yan's native grounds --- but a stone's throw from Beijing, one time German concession (Tsingtao beers), and spring board of Japanese World War II invasion via Korea, and, now in the late 1980s, the region suffers still after some 30 plus years under Communist rule. Strong copy despite flaws.

Wraps. Marcel Avond (illustratore). First Edition thus presumed. "Limited Edition" of 1,000 copies. Usual erotica flourishes, probably red herrings in major part, such as location of publishing, name of publisher, etc. Based supposedly on 17th century Chinese stories by Hsing Shih Hen Yen. N.d., with OCLC listings, of which there are eight in total, date this to the 30s and 50s. We think all the copies listed in the two entries are from the same date, and we tend to favor the earlier date as the accurate, or more accurate one, based on the similarity to numerous other such books that we know were issued in the thirties, but ultimately, ours is no more than an educated guess. 8vo. 183 pages Dusty soiling of the wraps, Generally clean and tight otherwise.
