Condizione: New. 2003 N & M Press reprint (original pub 1928). SB. xii+ 399pp Maps.numerous b/w illus. Published Price £22 The history of the New Zealand Empire Forces in the Great War is a heroic and a proud one, and this unusually full and frank regimental history does justice to a regiment that was at the centre of the strug…gle. The authors attribute the regimentâs outstanding record to a âhappy combination of a reasonable discipline - not enough to prejudice initiative, but sufficient to get a maximum team resultâ. The history records the departure of the regiment from its Wellington home, its training and baptism of fire in the Egyptian desert and its leading part in the gallant but doomed Gallipoli campaign against the Turks, in which it served continuously from the first landings in April 1915 to the eventual evacuation in December of that year. The regiment, now forming part of the New Zealand Division, fought around Armentieres before and after the battle of the Somme, in which it also served at Fricourt and Flers. The regiment had its first taste of the Ypres Salient in Ploogsteert Wood, before taking part in the triumphant Battle of Messines in June 1917, after which it was plunged into the third Ypres (Passchendaele) campaign at Gravenstafel, Wieltje and Polygon Wood. After the German Spring offensives of 1918, the regiment was sent south to the Somme to help plug the gap in the line punched by the enemy, seeing hard fighting around Mailly Mailly and Colincamps. The regimentâs battalions took part in the Allied counter-offensives in the summer and autumn of 1918, experiencing much tough fighting crossing the St Quentin canal. The Wellington regiment ended its war after the Armistice by crossing the Rhine into Germany. This fine history is illustrated with 40 vivid photographs; a Roll of Honour and a list of awards and honours , as well as two maps.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. Octavo. xii + 399 pages, illustrated with numerous photographs and plates, with the folding maps and Expeditionary List graph. An important and detailed first-edition history of the Wellington Regiment, N.Z.E.F. during the First World War, covering the formation of the regiment in 1914,…Gallipoli and the disastrous fighting at Chunuk Bair, the Western Front, the Armistice and the regiment's subsequent service in Germany. Includes the Roll of Honour, Awards and Decorations, and an appendix recording battalion locations during the advance to the Rhineland. Condition: Good-. No dust jacket. Original brown cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering to the front board and spine. The binding shows considerable age and wear, with rubbing and wear to the board edges, corners and spine ends. The rear board has noticeable white/grey surface mildew. The cloth remains intact overall. The contents are complete. All 399 pages are present, as are all photographs/illustrations and all folding maps/graph. There is very little foxing to the text, with the pages generally clean for a book of this period. The folding material/maps are all attached but: The Somme map has an approximately 4 cm tear. The large Messines map has an approximately 13 cm tear. The large Expeditionary List graph, approximately 40 cm wide, has an approximately 19 cm tear running across roughly half its width. There are some occasional creases/tears to the folding material as noted above, but no maps or pages are missing. There are some handwritten biro numbers to the inside cover. No owner's inscription or other significant provenance noted. The portrait plate of Lt.-Col. William Malone is present but partially detached. A scarce and historically important 1928 first edition of the Wellington Regiment's official-style history, with the complete photographic and cartographic material. Particularly valuable for collectors of New Zealand military history, First World War history and Wellington/Manawatu military history.
