Tali operazioni politiche e culturali servi…vano a giustificare il proprio espansionismo coloniale attraverso l'appropriazione e l'uso simbolico dei materiali della storia. Anche in Italia l'archeologia ha svolto un ruolo di primo piano, e mai prima esplorato, nella costruzione di un'alterità barbara, inferiore e subalterna, incapace di aver cura del passato. Un ruolo tanto più rilevante in quanto, nello stato liberale prima che nella propaganda fascista, l'archeologia proiettò l'immagine dell'Impero moderno sulle fondamenta di quello romano. Partendo dall'istituzione della Missione archeologica italiana a Creta (1899), passando per il 'discorso dell'antico' nella guerra italo-turca (1911-1912) e la nascita degli organismi di tutela nelle colonie di Libia e del Dodecaneso, il libro ricostruisce questa stagione attraverso il vissuto dei suoi protagonisti (degli archeologi come degli 'scavatori' reclutati localmente) e, al tempo stesso, getta luce sulle reazioni locali all'?espropriazione'. Ampio spazio viene poi dedicato al fascismo, mostrando la centralità dei nuovi siti libici (Cirene, Sabratha e Leptis Magna) nelle politiche del consenso del regime. Libro.
