Mass Market Paperback. Condizione: Poor. First Edition. I believe this was published as a paperback original by Boardman in the UK. Originally published in hard covers by Dodd, Mead & Co. in the US in 1945. Spine is very badly damaged with pieces missing and although the book has not started to fall apart it could not stand up to too much more of the treatment it has obviously had. The front panel looks nice however and is relatively undamaged. Needs a good home. Very rare in any edition. Cover illustration by Denis McLoughlin. First printing. McLoughlin, Denis (illustratore).

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good+. First Edition. (no dust jacket) [modest shelfwear, light soiling to yellow covers, slight darkening at spine]. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper: "For Mickey and Walter [Seltzer], / Who mid-wifed this baby / into the cinema. I hope it's / not a blithering idiot. / June / 8/4/47." Murder mystery, the author's second, and basis for the 1949 thriller THE ACCUSED, a Hal Wallis production for Paramount, directed by William Dieterle and starring Loretta Young and Robert Cummings. Although the co-inscribee, Walter Seltzer, would not become a film producer himself until the mid-1950s, in the years immediately following World War II he worked as director of publicity for Hal Wallis Productions, and I think it's safe to assume from the author's "mid-wifed" comment that he had been instrumental in bringing the book to Wallis's attention even before its publication. (According to Wikipedia, Wallis bought the film rights in June 1946, so the author's August 1947 "I hope it's not" comment reflects the fact that a year later, the film still hadn't commenced production: at various times, Barbara Stanwyck and Kirk Douglas were announced for the roles that were eventually filled by Young and Cummings, and filming of the movie didn't actually get underway until April 1948, with the release finally coming in January 1949. The British printing of this book, issued in 1948, seems to be fairly common (and is sometimes mistakenly referred to as the "true first"), but the Dodd, Mead edition is for some reason exceedingly scarce. I wish this copy still had its dust jacket, but as the Stones told us, you can't always get what you want. Signed by Author.
