À leur arrivée à Paris en 1943, la mère d'Antoine Tudal, Jeannine Guillou, et son compagnon depuis 1937, Nicolas de Staël, s'installent dans l'hôtel particulier de Pierre Chéreau, rue Nollet, dans le quartier des Batignolles. Pierre Chéreau est alors en exil en Amérique, son bien confisqué par les autorités allemandes ; c'est la galeriste Jeanne Bucher qui le leur fait ouvrir, avec son parc en friche où les gamins des rues avoisinantes viennent s'encanailler auprès du jeune Antoine.
