Januar 1521 wurde Luther mit der Bannbulle Decet Romanum Pontificem exkommuniziert. Dies und seine reformatorischen Hauptschriften machten Luther im ganzen Reich bekannt. Der Buchdruck, die allgemeine soziale Unzufriedenheit und politische Reformbereitschaft verhalfen ihm zu einem außergewöhnlichen publizistischen Erfolg: Bis zum Jahresende waren bereits 81 Einzelschriften und Schriftsammlungen von ihm erschienen, vielfach in andere Sprachen übersetzt, in insgesamt 653 Auflagen. In vielen Ländern regten sich ähnliche Reformbestrebungen, die stark von den politischen Spannungen zwischen Fürstentümern und Zentralmächten bestimmt wurden. Kurfürst Friedrich der Weise erreichte auf dem Verhandlungsweg, dass Luther seine Position vor dem nächsten Reichstag nochmals erläutern und verteidigen durfte. Luther begab sich mit seinen Gefährten am 2. April 1521 auf die Reise nach Worms, wofür die Stadt Wittenberg ihm ein Zehrgeld mitgab und einen Rollwagen mit Schutzdach zur Verfügung stellte. Da Mönche traditionell zu zweit reisten, wurde er von dem Mitbruder Johann Petzensteiner begleitet. Zur Reisegesellschaft gehörten außerdem Nikolaus von Amsdorff, der pommersche Adlige Peter von Suaven sowie (ab Erfurt) Justus Jonas. Am 17. Seltene Biographie! - Friedrich III. oder Friedrich der Weise von Sachsen (* 17. Januar 1463 in Torgau; 5. Mai 1525 in Lochau) war von 1486 bis zu seinem Tod 1525 Ku…rfürst von Sachsen. Nach den überlieferten Porträts hatte der Kurfürst einen beachtlichen Leibesumfang, weshalb ihn der päpstliche Nuntius Hieronymus Aleander als fettes Murmeltier beschrieb. Obwohl Friedrich der Weise nicht verheiratet war, hatte er mit der unstandesgemäßen Anna Weller mehrere Kinder. Trotz dieser Tatsache verlieh ihm Papst Leo X. 1518 die Goldene Rose, die höchste Auszeichnung des Papstes für besondere Verdienste um die katholische Kirche, in Wirklichkeit aber, um ihn zu bewegen, Luther an das Ketzergericht auszuliefern. Mit wahrer Leidenschaft sammelte er Reliquien über 19.000 mit dem Gegenwert von rund zwei Millionen Jahren Ablass. Die Reliquien, die er von seiner Wallfahrt im Jahr 1493 ins Heilige Land mitbrachte, bildeten den Grundstock seiner Sammlung, die er planmäßig erweiterte, so dass er schließlich die drittgrößte Reliquiensammlung seiner Zeit besaß. Die 1502 von ihm gegründete Universität Wittenberg entwickelte sich in den folgenden Jahrzehnten zu einer der bedeutendsten Universitäten. Zu Lebzeiten Friedrichs III. lag ihre Bedeutung vor allem in der von ihm geförderten Zuwendung zum Renaissance-Humanismus, später erlangte sie internationale Bedeutung als Ausgangspunkt und Lehrstätte der Reformation. Durch die Weigerung Friedrichs III., das 1518 von Rom gefällte Ketzerurteil gegen Luther anzuerkennen, die Zusicherung freien Geleites für Luther zum Reichstag zu Worms und seine Unterbringung auf der Wartburg nach der Ächtung entstand ein offener Interessenkonflikt zwischen dem sächsischen Kurfürsten und der römischen Kurie bzw. dem Kaiser. Diese beharrliche Entschlossenheit, aber auch seine Abneigung, kriegerisch in Konflikte einzugreifen, mit der der Wettiner seine nach Ausgleich strebende politische Grundeinstellung umsetzte, trug ihm in der späteren Geschichtsschreibung den Beinamen Friedrich der Weise ein. Friedrich der Weise, der Luther vor der Kirchengerichtsbarkeit ebenso wie vor dem Vollzug der kaiserlichen Acht in Schutz nahm, trug mit seiner stillen und beharrlichen Art entscheidend zur Ausbreitung der reformatorischen Ideen bei. Er war einer der wenigen Fürsten, die gegen die Vernichtung der Bauern während der Bauernkriege waren. Er war der Meinung, dass man die Forderungen der Bauern erfüllen sollte.
