Axel Munthe was a Swedish physician, psychiatrist, and writer, best known for his book The Story of San Michele (1929). Born on October 31, 1857, in Oskarshamn, Sweden, he studied medicine in Uppsala, Montpellier, and Paris, where he worked under the pioneering neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot. Munthe practiced medicine in Paris and Italy, often treating the poor for free and risking his life during disasters and epidemics. He became physician-in-ordinary to the Swedish royal family in 1908. His love for animals led him to establish a bird sanctuary near his home in Italy. His writing, often light-hearted yet tinged with tragedy, focused on people's quirks, social contrasts, and his deep compassion for both humans and animals. His memoir, The Story of San Michele, became a bestseller in multiple languages and remains widely read. This biography, the first to be published in English, includes hitherto unpublished letters and extracts from his writings including the suppressed 'Red Cross and Iron Cross' Ref W 5.
